Today we’d like to introduce you to Greg Spero.
Greg, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Music has always been a passion of mine. I’ve obsessed over it from a young age.
My path has taken me from Chicago’s jazz to New York’s hip-hop, to LA’s pop. I’ve toured the world with artists such as Halsey, performing to 15,000 people. However, my favorite place to play is still a small jazz club with an acoustic piano like Duc De Lumbards in Paris. In fact, I can’t wait to get back there with my new progressive jazz ground Spirit Fingers, which debuted at #20 on the jazz billboard charts last month.
I’m currently living in LA, bringing my musical history together in a new series called “Tiny Room”. I invite popular artists who I’ve known and worked with, into my studio with acoustic jazz musicians, and spend a day re-imagining their songs. We release weekly. You can find us everywhere.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Every day, I face a new challenge.
The key is thoughtfulness, persistence, knowing when to back down and knowing when to charge forward, and personal introspection. Never give up. But also be willing to be wrong and be willing to change when the time is right.
Seven years ago, I went from the top of the Chicago scene to the bottom of the LA scene. Then, I rose up in the LA jazz scene, and eventually to the top of the pop scene. I left that position 3 months ago, the same day as our biggest performance on Saturday Night Live. Now, I’m starting a new era with Spirit Fingers and Tiny Room, which are both growing rapidly. I’m excited to see what’s next in this journey.
Me – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I make music.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The day I chose to take my grandmother (RIP) on a walk around the block instead of working on my career.
