Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan Polcyn.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Personally I was raised in a family that used a chiropractic physician often. My grandfather, uncle, aunt and cousin are all licensed chiropractors in Wisconsin so you could say that it is a family profession. There was a point while attending U of I in Champaign/Urbana that was set to attend medical school to pursue a profession as a surgeon. However, I eventually returned to chiropractic because of the personal, one-on-one doctor/patient relationships.
I was lucky enough to find a like-minded friend while attending high school at Providence Catholic academy and we the rest is history!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Owning multiple businesses of any kind is never a “smooth road”. However, having the privilege to help more than a thousand patients a year alleviate pain and live a healthier life makes all of the bumps in the road worth it.
The most challenging aspect of healthcare today is staying current with the ever changing coding and health insurance markets. Independent physician offices are at a distinct disadvantage because most doctors are not good at staying current with the ever changing rules and regulations.
Hospitals and large groups have teams of staff that make sure the doctors are billing and coding correctly.
Also, in today’s healthcare professions paperwork has become extremely burdensome. Most doctors are spending a larger portion of their day behind a computer as opposed to spending time with patients.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Integrated Physical Medicine – what should we know?
At all of our clinic locations we strive to be the most well-rounded physical care an individual will find. We utilize a broad palette of tools and techniques to find the best and most custom programs for each patient. For example, if a patient walks through the door that needs a series of chiropractic manipulations, core strength rehabilitation and soft tissue mobilization many clinics won’t be set up to handle that program. We are the exception, by employing skilled chiropractors and therapists that have extensive training in rehabilitation and other manual therapies we can take the most complex cases.
Another factor that I feel sets us apart and frankly gives me the most pride is our commitment to spend time with our patients. Unfortunately, most doctor offices are fast paced and mechanical and often times that personal connection is lost in the shuffle.
Our patients never wait to see the doctor for long, they never feel rushed and they know that they can call and actually speak with their doctor if they would like. We may not have the largest profit margin treating patients like humans, but I don’t feel that profit margin should be a physician’s driving force.
By taking our time doing thorough evaluations, setting up appropriate care plans and striving to empower our patients to take care of themselves we know that we are giving our patients 110%. That is a great feeling.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I think Dr. Scott and I need to give a large portion of the credit to our wives and business partners Heather Polcyn and Vanessa Kenny. They have both supported IPM through thick and thin and frankly we couldn’t have done it without them. We are also extremely lucky to have the best bookkeeper in the world since the beginning Barb Gfesser, our organizational ability is your gift to us and our clinics. We are also forever indebted to the financial support we have received from our families after the banks let us down in the 11th hour. Special thanks to Anton Gfesser Sr(OPI) and Jr. as well as Dr. Joe Kenny for sticking their necks out for us at the very beginning. Also, big thanks to Pat & Dori Polcyn for investing in our Joliet location and getting us through a particularly tight time financially. Special thanks also has to be given separately to Anton Gfesser Jr. for spending many hours mentoring on all things business with Dr. Scott and me. I can honestly say that the business foundation I personally have received from Anton’s mentoring has strengthened and insulated me and our companies to weather nearly any storm.
