Today we’d like to introduce you to Alyssa Cruz.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Alyssa. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve been obsessed with makeup since I can remember. I have an older sister and mother who I would watch every day applying their full face of makeup and was just memorized.
I remember stealing my sister’s foundation and bronzer in 6th grade, I went to a Catholic school where makeup wasn’t really allowed, so I had to keep it very minimal. So, of course, my 7th-grade year, I transferred to a public school and went full force with a full glam, lashes and all. Youtube also had a lot to do with my learning, I am a self-taught makeup artist before youtube became big I watched all your classic you tubers and learned from there. I started practicing on my family which later led to my amazing clientele and work opportunities. I’ve worked on different shoots, short films and some celebrity clientele like Niki and Gabi, I have also taken a class with Priscilla Ono who I adore and still admire her beautiful work! Right now, I am working for a brand I have always admired and looked up to MAC and hope to move to LA and grow my artistry even more.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being a freelance MUA definitely has its struggles. Sometimes, you never know when the next job might be, there are so many MUAs out there now that you have to work twice as hard to stand out and hope people can see how passionate and caring you are of your craft.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am a freelance makeup artist who specializes in glam, editorial, and bridal work. I like to say I enjoy it all. I do love to specialize in full red carpet glam looks.
I’ve been told I can make a full glam still look so natural and classic. My favorite part is to make someone feel special and beautiful even if it’s just for that one day.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I think being passionate about your craft is what makes you even more successful. I care so much about what work I put out, I want my followers to enjoy it and even be inspired by looks I post which I think is the greatest success.
