Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Smith.
Ashley, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
When I was younger, I always grabbed a hairbrush and pretended it was a microphone. I knew then I wanted to host, interview and be the star of my own show. I am an entrepreneur, a travel expert, and a social influencer. I started this journey after graduating from Columbia College Chicago in 2015 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism. Months before graduation, I begin applying for news reporting jobs. A friend of mine mentioned an airline was hiring flight attendants and I should apply. A few weeks later, I was in training for this major airline and traveling the world. I planned to become a flight attendant for about a year, but two years had passed and I was still there. I wondered what was next. I’ve always been ready to shoot, write and edit video for television and didn’t want to lose those skills. I started a YouTube channel to keep my journalism skills up to par as well as capture my travel experiences.
Becoming a flight attendant is honestly the best decision I could have ever made for myself and my brand. I’ve seen so many parts of the world that I thought I wouldn’t see until I was much older and in a different pay grade. My YouTube channel has grown massively since I started and I can only imagine where it will be in another year.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. Many speed bumps on this journey as a flight attendant as well as YouTuber. Having to adjust to this new lifestyle has been rough, but the job always gets done when I put my mind to something. Bringing my YouTube channel in the mix also took time. I’d tell anyone starting their journey as a flight attendant to be prepared for the unexpected. No one day is the same. This lifestyle is full of surprises. Anyone starting a YouTube channel should be sure to post quality content and stay consistent.

I am known for my role as a YouTuber. There, I capture my adventures as a flight attendant and share my travel experiences. I am most proud of how much my YouTube channel has grown in such a small timeframe. What sets me apart from others is that my content is authentic and informative.
Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
I believe a woman can do anything a man can do. We may be presented with similar opportunities, but we aren’t paid what we deserve. We also are not as appreciate and respected in fields of work that are male-dominated.
