Meet Robert Knop of Robert Knop Painting in West Town

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Knop.

Robert, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have been in the painting business since 1999. Coming from Europe gave me a unique perspective on approaching the business. The hands-on experience that I gained here allowed me to combine the best of both worlds in terms of craft and service. I was always interested in Art and Design so going into the painting business was a relatively easy choice. Going through a series of painting positions, and later a business partnership, shaped and clarified my vision of how I want to manage my own business. Robert Knop Painting started in 2001. My passion for artistic painting encouraged me to go beyond standard painting and enter the field of advanced techniques. I graduated from Harrington College of Design in 2011. Those four years of aquiring design knowledge contributes a great deal of value to my approach.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The beginning was tough since I had no contacts or line of existing clients. I tried advertising but it did not work. I could not justify the costs when compared with the benefits. It took many years to develop relationships with realtors and interior designers who are now my main providers of work. I like to stay small so that I can control quality but it still presents challenges when I am juggling multiple projects or large projects. Finding skilled assistants on an as needed basis is always tricky.

Robert Knop Painting – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I provide a range of finishing services, that being paint, stain, varnish, or lacquer. I do straight painting, faux finishes, murals, and refinishing kitchen cabinetry. My main focus these days is to expand in the field of decorative painting and murals. I wish to do more of those unique and personalized projects as they bring joy and fulfillment to my work. I think that my clients value my work ethics such as attention to details, cleanliness, being on time, respecting their space, and even my personality. Many people in my industry talk about those things but only few are able to work in a timely and respectful manner.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Original Random answer: It would have to be when my client looks me straight in the eye and tells me that after watching me work for a couple of days, considering all the details, he or she sees me as a true professional. I have gotten complements on my work from many clients but when I get sincere and personal recognition of my efforts as a professional it makes it all worthwhile.
