Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Kusek.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I am a lucky wife and mother of two beautiful children. When I’m not playing Mom, I get to spend my time working with babies, children & families to create lifelong memories for them. It doesn’t get much better than that!
I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts and began my career as a graphic designer. It wasn’t until after getting married that I began to pursue my passion for photography. I have my wonderful husband to thank for that! Life hasn’t been the same since! I never imagined having a career that would leave me so inspired and fulfilled. I truly love what I do!
Please tell us about your art.
I specialize in newborn and family photography, but my latest obsession is creating documentary films for families and small businesses. I LOVE them! While I love capturing moments through traditional photography, I was eager to offer something completely new and unique for my clients. This desire to film came at a time when my husband and I were noticing how quickly our little ones were changing. We wanted to freeze time and be able to relive these fleeting moments!
What do you think about conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
I think artistry has really changed over the last decade. Because of the social media age, it’s so easy to view and compare yourself to another artist’s. While I like the idea that our art reaches so many more people these days, it also makes the game so much more competitive. You really have to figure out what defines you and your work. It’s quite a journey figuring how to make yourself stand out from the pack! In today’s society, I think we need to encourage young artists to be true to who they are! We need to teach them how to really hone in on their own craft.
