Today we’d like to introduce you to Dan Sullivan.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I opened the cafe in 2006 as a part of a project to create a revitalized sense of community that surrounds the Jarvis L stop. We call it JARVIS SQUARE. Charmers was one of several new businesses that opened as a part of that effort.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not been a smooth road because of extremely tight profit margins, predatory inspectors and my own inexperience.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Charmers Cafe story. Tell us more about the business.
Charmers is a small local cafe that serves Metropolis-roasted coffee and the usual treats and meal items that people expect from a cafe. We are primarily here to support the neighborhood and the sense of community we describe as JARVIS SQUARE. I am most proud of the friendliness of our staff. What sets us apart is our community-focus.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
We’ve had our share of both good and bad luck over the years since we opened in 2006. The good luck is like magic. The bad luck has put us in existential crises. I recommend that no one would ever do this unless they can survive the bad luck.
