Conversations with the Inspiring Renee Bolton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Renee Bolton.

Renee is a Beauty Maven and the Author of the book series, “#ImBeautyInspired”. Her passion is beauty and her purpose is to empower women. With over 15 years in the beauty industry, she’s combined her love for beauty and her passion for writing.

Renee’s passion for writing started with writing poetry in the 8th grade. Throughout the years, some of her work was featured on Refinery 29 and Chicago Now for Six Brown Chicks. Her book, “#ImBeautyInspired A Keepsake Journal of Original Beauty Quotes and Affirmations” was endorsed by the iconic leader of feminism, Gloria Steinem. Gloria tweets, “Looking for a book for your teenager?” Check out #ImBeautyInspired: A Keepsake Journal by @abeautyscarlet.” With Steinem’s endorsement, Renee joins the movement to empower women.

Women’s issues are important to Renee. She was a mentor and Board Member for LOV Mentoring. She was the Director of Membership for ColorComm – Women of Color in Communication. And she donates 10% of her book sales to the YWCA Chicago for every book purchased via www.yshop.org. In 2014, she was a Semi-Finalist for the My Black is Beautiful Campaign. A Proctor and Gamble sponsored campaign to encourage women to embrace beauty from the inside out.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a bumpy ride and I have encountered many obstacles along the way. Fear was my biggest obstacle and hardest struggle to overcome.

My biggest fear was failure and my deepest fear was success. I used to be afraid that people wouldn’t understand my work. I used to believe that my writing wasn’t good enough. As Erykah Badu so eloquently stated, “I’m an artist and I’m sensitive about my sh!t!”

I was shy, I never thought it was good enough and I was my worst critic. After investing in a great business coach. I soon realized that it didn’t matter if anyone accepted my work or writing; it only had to be good enough for me! If I accepted it and believed in it then others will see the confidence in me and accept it too.

On the flip side, I was scared of being successful and sometimes I still feel that way. I feel like if I get too successful I may lose my passion and understanding of what got me there in the first place. I don’t want to change who I am.

But I have come to realize that change is good because it helps you grow. And if I get out of my own way I can set the tone for my success and at the pace that I want.

Now, I have made a declaration to myself to get out and stay out of my own way! I will learn, I will grow and I will have success in every area of my life. I will not look back and I will move forward! I will do what I feel and live without regrets. And I will no longer let my fears control my destiny because I am destined for greatness!

My advice for anyone who is afraid is to move past your fears and get out of your own way. You can’t grow or win living in fear; let go and step out on faith!

what should we know about Scarlet Beauty Media? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My purpose in life is to inspire and empower women to embrace their inner beauty and apply more self-love. My goal is to change the world’s view of beauty. I want people to know and understand that beauty is not what you see, it’s who you are.

My passion is the beauty industry. I have a crush on makeup, an affection for skincare, and a love affair with all things beauty. I’m a beauty addict!

I’m most proud of being an Amazon Best Selling Author of the collaborative book, “Transition: Create The Life You Desire” Presented by Precious Brown. I’m proud of being a co-host of the lifestyle podcast Beauties & Banter. We inspire and empower women with real-life conversations and life experiences. I’m currently working on a new venture to manage the careers of a hairstylist. I’m helping them take their careers from behind the chair to stage.

What sets me apart from others? I’ve created a brand where inner and outer beauty collide.

What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
What are some of the biggest barriers to female leadership? A lot of brands offer cookie cutter solutions. Beauty is not a one size fits all. Every person is unique to who they are and what they offer. Most brands don’t take the time to offer individualized solutions. And the industry is not as diversified as it should be.
