Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Kozol.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Kevin. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
House Call Music was a vision of mine that started back in 2005 when I graduated DePaul University. I had a bunch of private students at the time and could no longer take on new students, so I brought on another instructor and continued to grow from there. Today, we have nearly 20 instructors who teach a variety of instruments ranging from piano, guitar, bass, violin, voice, drums, woodwinds and brass. All of our faculty members were handpicked by me and all of them hold music degrees from some of finest music programs in the country (most have masters degrees and some are even working toward doctorates).
I realized early on that “in home” lessons was a great idea because it made the lessons convenient for the families and students. I think that is a big reason we have continued to grow all these years. We just had our Spring Recital and I could not believe the turnout! We had nearly 100 performers and a few hundred people in the audience throughout the day. It’s humbling to see this type of growth!
I have to thank my good friend and colleague, Troy Brenningmeyer, for helping me develop the company image and for designing our website. Having an attractive website and a strong company logo is a huge reason for our success. The user friendly vibe of the website has helped create a lot of traffic to our page.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Like anything in life, there are always ups and downs and I am sure this continue throughout my pursuits. The positives are 1. We are an “in home” music teaching service that seems to be in high demand. 2. I have been fortunate to find top notch instructors who share the same passion of music and teaching as myself. 3. We have incredible families who continue to help spread the word about our business.
I would say the biggest struggle at first was finding a brand and creating an image for the business concept. There were many long hours put in to finding a name and designing our website. Like I mentioned earlier, thanks Troy Brenningmeyer for helping me with this vision.
House Call Music Ltd – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
House Call Music Ltd is a teaching service in the Chicago, Denver and Detroit area that provides high quality lessons in the comfort of your own home. All instructors of House Call Music have bachelor’s degrees in music and most have master’s degrees and doctorates from some of the finest music programs in the country. Students of House Call Music will receive one on one music instruction every week and will have the opportunity to perform recitals and attend clinics/workshops given by the faculty or guest clinicians. Lessons are offered on nearly all instruments to all ages and abilities in classical, jazz, rock, popular and any other style/genre that the student would like to explore. We also encourage students to compose and create their own music! Many of our students have gone one to study music in college and have formed amazing groups throughout the years.
What sets us apart from other music teaching companies is the fact that we come to your home and create schedules that are convenient for everyone involved. Also, our instructors are some of most sought after musicians and educators in their respective cities! The students are inspired by the fact their instructor is out there creating music and leading their own musical projects. Having a passion for music is key!
I am so proud of our faculty and everything they bring to the lessons and business. We are always communicating and thinking of ways to make lessons more enjoyable for the students while pushing them to become the best musician they can be. Having fun at the lessons makes students want to practice. It’s contagious!

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
For me, success is seeing the students smiling after the recital every year. Obviously, you can measure success in numbers as well because we grow so much each year, but that’s because of our amazing faculty! We will continue to grow as musicians/educators while spreading a positive message about the beauty of music and the arts. We are always looking ahead.
