Conversations with the Inspiring Sarah Coe

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Coe. She and her team share her story with us below.

Please kick things off for us with some background on the story.
Sarah Coe Design was established in 2003 in Indianapolis, Indiana. In 2016, Sarah sold her client book of business because her husband was relocated to Chicago. Due to the nature of the move and since she has three young children, she decided to take a year off from work before launching her interior design company in Glen Ellyn. While working on re-doing her own home, one of the many projects included painting the outside of their brick cottage white, she started to receive more than one note in her mailbox as well as people stopping on the sidewalk commenting on how they loved the changes and asking for help on their own homes. She put a “Sarah Coe Design” yard sign in the yard and immediately started booking appointments and has been steadily successful ever since. In the fall of 2017, she hired a project manager and in July another interior designer. In November, she will be opening The Design Studio by Sarah Coe Design in downtown Glen Ellyn a space for inspiration and one of a kind finds for clients and the public.

Sarah, let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being an entrepreneur is never easy and often very lonely. I had some wise advice in college to take some business classes and I ended up minoring in marketing. This was one of the best decisions I could have made. Also, early on, I realized bookkeeping was not my strong suit and so I started outsourcing it. Find out what you are good at and what you love and hire out the rest, it is so worth it. I also have a loving and supportive husband who constantly encourages me to grow my business and supports me when clients or projects are challenging.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I specialize in residential interior design. Function is always at the center of my design projects. Creating beauty and order has always been what I love to do. I love helping clients create spaces that they enjoy sharing with friends and family. My favorite compliments are when clients tell me they love having people over and now they use their spaces more often because they are so beautiful and functional. I have had the pleasure of working alongside custom home builders helping clients with all the countless selections and functions of a new home, as well as remodeling kitchens, bathrooms and so much more. I create custom room plans with new furniture and all the finishing touches. I love using one of a kind pieces that bring the past to the present.

Which women have inspired you in your life?
My mom and grandmother. My grandmother was an artist and she taught me a love for art at a very early age, she also had an art studio in her house and it became my special retreat growing up. My mom has always encouraged me to use the gifts God has given me and be true to who He made me be. She said that if you are able to love what you do for work, it will never matter how much money you make, you will be fulfilled and bring life to others.
