Meet William Jamison

Today we’d like to introduce you to William Jamison.

We’d love to hear about how you got to where you are today.  Can you walk us through your story?
Have you ever felt that the way of life you’re living isn’t quite for you? That majority of the situations placed in front of you weren’t always based upon your own choices?
Yeah, me too.

All our lives we’re programmed to obtain skills that would allow us to be controlled & think inside the box: work efficiently for someone else or help maintain a systematic structure of life.

Tru Lies is a brand created to represent that lost culture. We highlight being your Tru self, rather than living the Lies society has planned for you. We are part of the generation that was born to follow their passion; Take chances, make mistakes, move forward, and constantly aiming high. Imagination without Skepticism… Success with NO RULES OR LIMITS.

Growing up on the Southside of Chicago was quite the experience, but to say the least, it showed me how to appreciate True opportunity. All my life I’ve been a salesman; from grammar school selling snacks and candy to high school selling denim to my friends that I drew cool cartoon characters on. Not only was this a way to make money & buy frivolous things teenagers like, but it was also a way for me to create a need. I enjoyed having a purpose where people needed my services.

Fast forwarding this story a tad bit more, I became a UIUC student in 2007. The college experience really broadened my mind in terms of meeting new people/cultures, finding out what I like to do, and also learning how to make decisions on my own.

In 2009, I lost my scholarship due to the recession. The administration explained to me regardless of my grades they couldn’t afford to keep my scholarship valid, so they had to close the program. This was an eye-opener for me. I came to the conclusion that school is a business; no matter how hard you work to follow the guidelines given, keep the grades up, regurgitate information onto Scantron sheets, the end goal was about money.

During this time frame, the whole concept of Tru Lies was created. As crushed as I was, I found power in my disposition. I made it my duty to find a way to educate the public on following your True Dreams & not allowing anyone or anything to stop you from achieving it.

I brought this idea to my friends & they accepted it with open arms. It was initially their ideas that helped cultivate it into an actual urban brand. We were going to make “being yourself” cool by broadcasting these messages on printable apparel. Starting this brand with my friends not only helped me get the funds to pay for school, but it gave me true purpose and allowed me to think outside the box; tapping into creativity and resources I never knew I had.

Moving forward It’s 2011 & I’m now a college graduate with a Business Marketing degree. Fresh into the real world, extremely optimistic about becoming the best I can be. I jump into the corporate realm working for T-Mobile as an account executive, a fancy word for business to business marketing. I was pretty good at it, but In the back of my mind, I felt empty. I was beginning a new journey falling right back into the box of societal standards. So I made a decision.

In 2013, I quit my job working in corporate and decided to bet on myself. I wanted to continue the Tru Lies Brand and share it with the world. With the money I saved up, I invested in print equipment that would help me make all the printable apparel I needed to get started. My parents saw how serious and dedicated I was to doing this, so they allowed me to use the basement of their home to get started. The only thing they asked was, “if you’re going to do this, I do it well”. I never looked back since.

It is now 2018, and things are still moving forward. I now have a store in Bronzeville Chicago. I created another business venture called Blank Canvas, which is a graphics and print company created to help businesses and other creatives jumpstart their brands. I work with an awesome creative director (Darryl Vance) and brand operator (Stefan Logan) who helps me push Tru Lies to higher platforms. The best is still yet to come.

Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
The easiest way to not make money is to focus on making money. Once you can visualize your lifestyle in the long term, following your true passion will allow you to maximize the resources around you. This is a marathon not a Sprint! You have to practice patience.
