Today we’d like to introduce you to Whitney Rose a.k.a. “Teeth Talk Girl”.
Whitney, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
After graduation from dental hygiene school, I started my YouTube channel while waiting for my license to arrive in the mail because I couldn’t wait to start my career as a dental hygienist. So, I started making dental hygiene educational videos and people actually started watching.
Since then, I’ve continued making videos and it’s become my part-time job. I have a background in acting, so putting myself out there initially wasn’t a concern. I was just so excited to combine my acting/film/editing knowledge with dental hygiene in efforts to help people in a non-traditional way!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all a smooth road! Throughout my undergraduate, I went down some of the darkest roads… and although dental hygiene school was lighter – it’s still school, right? In the midst of all this schooling, I was trying to do as much acting on the side as possible… theatre, short films, writing, etc. Since my super dream was always to become an actress… it’s been a rocky road of dueling passions – teeth versus acting. I truly love them both and it has always been difficult pouring my heart into both… until YouTube!
I’m starting to love the idea of becoming a professional YouTuber. If I can’t get my energy out on the big screen, at least I can get my energy out on my small computer screen. However, starring in a toothpaste commercial with Meryl Streep would be cool, too.
YouTube.com/TeethTalk – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I know it may sound naive, but I’m truly proud to be helping people. I love going to sleep each night knowing I’ve done my ultimate best to help each person I’ve seen throughout the day, in one way or another. I still work as a dental hygienist in private practice – so, of course, I feel great about helping my patients throughout the day. But now, in addition to my personal patients, I’m able to contribute to community dental health by providing dental health tips to endless numbers of people on YouTube!
I feel that my humorous, light-hearted video vibe sets me apart from the business-like, serious dental videos. My mission is to spread dental health awareness while being myself. I figured if I’m not hiding my personality, I will connect better with people, as opposed to putting on my “serious face” for the camera. I tend to have an energetic, weird, loud attitude – and I’m thrilled that people say it shows in my videos.
In all, I’m very proud of my YouTube channel’s organic growth, which has been allowing me to help spread dental health awareness to numerous individuals… I can’t even think of the right word to express my happiness on how everything has been unfolding.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Easily, my proudest moments are when individuals (followers, subscribers, strangers) reach out to me on YouTube or Instagram thanking me for my videos and telling me why a particular dental fact has helped them or resonated with them or even made them laugh. This validates my work and gives me the energy I need to continue creating new content. Not to mention the positive emotions this brings about… “the feels”!!!
