Today we’d like to introduce you to Simal Turan.
Simal, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Growing up, I always knew I’d own my own clothing store. My dad owns his own business and always told me, “learn the business and when you are ready to let me know.” I bounced around managing different clothing stores until I finally just had it. I went home one day and googled “how to start a retail clothing store” and the next day gave him the numbers and what my vision was and within three months Kiz was up and running.
Has it been a smooth road?
I honestly don’t think it’s ever a completely smooth road owning your own business. I have days that I wonder why in the world I ever got into this business and other days are so rewarding and can’t imagine doing anything else. I have a lot of people who praise me for taking the risk and I honestly believe if you believe in yourself anyone can do it. You can’t be afraid to try, if it doesn’t work out don’t take it as a failure, take it as a lesson.
We’d love to hear more about Kiz Chicago.
What sets Kiz apart from other stores would probably be… I’ m the worst/best salesperson. I’ll never pressure you into buying something. If you don’t LOVE it, don’t buy it! I told myself from day one, it’s not about the sale it’s about making sure your client leaves feeling good and can look in their closet ready to wear that piece again. I hate nothing more than having something in my closet that just sits there because some sales person wanted to make a sale and convinced you that you looked amazing and needed it. We also offer same day drop off (within 10miles of Kiz) for those moments you need an outfit and don’t have time to make it in.
I use Instagram as much as I can. I was always afraid to really put myself out there until I finally shut the overthinking down and said try it if it doesn’t work try something else. And it works! I’m officially the girl in the mirror taking pictures and posting videos all day long. When my clients come in, the majority of them will say “I saw this on Instagram.” At that moment, I knew it was working and I challenge myself every day to become more open and make it more personal because at the end of the day I am Kiz.
Do you feel like there was something about the experiences you had growing up that played an outsized role in setting you up for success later in life?
My father was born in Turkey and at the young age of 23 he left his family and moved to the United States. He then started working in different steel companies until he opened his very own steal company and has now been in business for 30 some years. Growing up and seeing his dedication and learning that owning your own business the sky is your limit was enough for me to never give up on my dream. I always knew having to listen to someone else tell me what to do would never be a life I’d want.
