Meet Trailblazer Patricia Howard

Today we’d like to introduce you to Patricia Howard.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
At a very young age, I began to be intrigued by the art of cosmetology and taught myself how to braid which has been my specialty for over a decade. Although, braiding is my specialty I am also a well versatile stylist. In mid-June of 2016, I decided to quit my full-time job to pursue my passion. This is one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life, as I finally feel like I have a career rather than a job. This experience alone has taught me so much as I am still learning how to step out of my comfort zone and grow as a cosmetologist. I can honestly say the best part of my career is learning new things and enhancing my craft.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Due to the beauty industry being at such high demand, branding is very important. There are so many cosmetologists out there which means being consistent with branding is a must. The advice I have for young women or men who are starting their journey is to stay consistent. Reason being, your brand is your business. The more they see you the less likely they are to forget you. And even when you feel like no one is paying attention, they are. I struggle with consistency when it comes to branding as well, yet I am working forwards making changes.

Alright – so let’s talk about your work. Tell us about PrettyByPatti – what should we know?
I specialize in healthy hair. Rather it’s braiding or styling my main focus is for my client’s hair to remain healthy. Ultimately, I am known for specializing in braids. Braids are one of many protective styles for any occasion. As a stylist, I pride myself on taking care of my client’s hair, which is one of any things that set me apart from others. Along with my professionalism and personable interactions with my clients.

We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
Generally speaking, one of the biggest barriers in today’s leadership, in my opinion, is the lack of unity. In any industry, I believe we should all have the mindset that there’s enough success for everyone, and even more, if help one another.
