Meet Stan Rousonelos of HPMillwork in Highland Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stan Rousonelos.

Stan, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started selling insurance while in college. Mostly disability and accident policies. It was a nightmare job. But I quickly learned that I could make money by selling companies that had high risk jobs. My last call in that career was a lumber yard in Lake Geneva Wisconsin called Dunn Lumber. I wanted to sell their delivery and fork truck drivers accident policies. After several attempts with one of the owners, he finally told me he wasn’t interested in the insurance but wanted to hire me. Nearly 25 years later, I now have my own store.

Between then and now, I worked as a Pella corp employee in sales for many years. Helped start a window program for Allied Building Products, and a few smaller window and door shops and lumber yards. Every place I worked for gave me more knowledge and the ability to listen to my customer.

However, in the end…the thing that sets me apart from my competition, was my field experience. As a struggling young husband and father, there was always the need for more income. After work, I would always try and go out and install a job. Starting out simple with storm doors and trim work, and working my way up to additions and renovations of kitchens and baths. It has helped me be able to look at a project with the eye of an installer and the knowledge of a deep basket of product information.

Has it been a smooth road?
There is always struggles in this business, otherwise you wouldn’t be trying very hard. Not setting up expectations properly, material not showing up or possibly damaged, and not being able to share the same vision as my past employers. So when the opportunity to start my own store finally came, I ran it exactly the way I wanted to with one simple rule. Treat and do the job as if it was for my family.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I started the company thinking that we would be a window and door store. Selling to contractors and designers. And installing product for homeowners. Now, that only represents 25% of what we do. We are quickly getting a great reputation for kitchens, baths, and cabinetry and millwork jobs. I also learned that there was a need for maintenance for many of the homes in the area. Many homeowners don’t want to spend tens of thousands to have their windows replaced. We have found a niche in repairing and keeping windows and doors original at a fraction of the cost and still preforming great. New weatherstrip, caulk and paint goes a long way.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
This city is mecca of business. There are countless jobs available for those that are willing to work hard and be reputable.
