Meet Shawn Uldridge of The Publishing House B&B in The West Loop

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shawn Uldridge.

The idea of The Publishing House came about back in 2008 when Kimberly Lowery decided to rent out her Melbourne, Australia, home on a new website called Airbnb. By the time their first guest arrived, Lowery was out of town, and left her husband Shawn Uldridge, to handle the guests. Uldridge was hesitant towards the idea at first and didn’t understand why they should share their home with strangers. But his mind was quickly changed.

The Melbourne native was working as a stockbroker on the Australian exchange before he decided to turn his focus to The Publishing House. By early 2013, he and Lowery were living in Chicago and decided to launch a B&B. They looked all over Chicago to find the perfect place but the building where they landed, formerly the Museum of Holography, was the ideal spot. Uldridge and Lowery bought the property for $2.35 million, then spent another $4 million in renovations. The result is an 11-room B&B in a neighborhood where a B&B would have been unthinkable 10 years ago. In the basement, the couple opened The Press Room wine bar.

Has it been a smooth road?
We tend to take the rough with the smooth! To bring this dream into reality we needed to focus on exactly what we wanted to achieve all along the way or we wouldn’t have what we have here. We were incredibly fortunate to find this building in the first place, but it took more than 18 months to put the financing and permits in place for the construction, which was probably the most challenging part.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with The Publishing House B&B – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We’re a bed and breakfast. We welcome guests into our home as if it’s their own home. A comfortable bed, beautiful surroundings, scrumptious breakfast. We’re known for our breakfasts and we set ourselves apart from others by being unique in having a truly urban B&B that’s almost in the downtown area of Chicago.

I can vouch for the friendly and homelike atmosphere–if you live in a wonderful house, surrounded by art and comfy, funky furniture, and have a personal chef who does breakfast to die for. Highly recommended for a getaway to Chicago.
