Meet Shannon Patel of Pain Relief Institute

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shannon Patel.

Shannon, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Our group began 17 years ago with a single facility in Vernon Hills and grew to 8 centers across Chicagoland. Offering medical services focused on interventional pain management, employing medical doctors specializing in everything from family practice to physical medicine to anesthesia.

Each year we would survey our patients to see if we met their healthcare exceptions and they had a favorable experience in our centers. Each year the patients became more and more vocal that they wanted more conservative care and did not want traditional medicine. They would say they were coming to us as an alternative to the hospitals and large corporate medical groups in search of more conservative and holistic approaches to helping them with their pain. Approximately 12 years ago we added physical therapy as an option for conservative care to complement our medical services. Very quickly thereafter the patients overwhelming opted for physical therapy as the initial treatment regimen over medications, injections or surgery. So 7 years ago, we decided to make a change and give the patients what they were asking for and became a physical therapy based group, we restructured the organization to work with medical doctors on a referral basis rather than as employees of the group. When indicated we would refer to the appropriate medical specialist to aid in controlling the patients pain while they were receiving physical therapy. The patients were very pleased with the therapy services we offered but would regularly tell our therapist they wished there was an alternative to getting steroid injections or pain medications.

With the surge in technological advances over the past 10 years we began to research conservative pain management options. It became clear that in an age of flat screen TVs and smartphones, pain management had not made the same advances. The primary options remained medications, injections or surgery. Being unsuccessful in finding an alternative option in the US we began researching Europe and Asia and what we found completely changed our practice. For nearly 20 years Europe was using laser technology to conservatively treat pain, and was treating it successfully. We began testing a laser from Italy developed by ASA lasers and the results were astounding. We now had the conservative alternative that our patients had been asking for the last 17 years. Approximately 3 years ago we purchased the class IV dual wavelength robotics MLS laser and have performed over 3000 procedures with a success rate greater than 90%. The procedures take between 8-27 minutes typically and patients feel a difference after the first eight minute procedure. The procedure is completely painless, non-invasive, no down time, the patient walks out and goes about their day as they normally would and has no known side effects. In early 2017 ASA released their newest laser, the HILT, which is deeper penetrating and more powerful. Both lasers are cleared by the FDA and have extensive clinical trials that have performed. The primary benefits of the lasers are: reducing inflammation, analgesic affect to reduce pain, increasing blood flow for healing and cell regeneration of damaged soft tissue cells. Today we are the only center in the Chicago area offering HILT and MLS for non-invasive pain management and only 1 of less than a handful in the country. With the success of the lasers we have continued to add other options for patients that remain minimally invasive wherein we can continue to avoid medications and steroid injections. In addition to the laser we offer Visco-Supplemention for knee pain (natural substance introduced into the knee to provide cushioning and lubrication for arthritic knees), COOLIEF (a minimally invasive procedures to help alleviate or reduce knee pain) and Platelet-Rich Plasma procedures (commonly known as PRP, this is drawing the patients’ blood and separating the platelets and re-inserting them in the area of pain to use the patient’s own platelets and body to create the healing process naturally). We remain a physical therapy oriented group offering non-invasive pain management and have partnered with the most highly respected pain specialist to carry out the other procedures. We continue to research for new alternatives for our patients and will be adding 3 locations by the end of 2017 and another 3-4 locations in 2018 to be able to better serve the Chicago area.

Please tell us about Pain Relief Institute.
We are the only non-invasive pain management group in the Chicago area.

We have found options outside of the normal realm of traditional medicine that does not have side effects and does not negatively affect the patients.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Our journey is what has helped us become who we are today. Healthcare is a very competitive environment and being average is very easy and can be lucrative, but creating a special experience and thinking outside the box of traditional medicine is far more rewarding.
