Meet Shahina Hussain of Shahina Hussain Label in North Side

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shahina Hussain.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Shahina. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My day to day lifestyle is influenced by a foundation deeply rooted in Indian culture, traditions, and values. I also like to believe that I get my creative side from my mom as I began painting at a very young age when she handed down her old canvases and oil paints to me. With every brush stroke, I realized that I had a knack for bringing to life everything I envisioned. This quality was also apparent when I began styling various outfits from my wardrobe.

I strongly believe that dressing up is a form of art. Walking through the aisles of fabric stores, learning about the details of Indian embroidery always fascinated me. The clothes I wear are a direct reflection of my interests in vintage European clothing styles and latest trends. I started following well-known Eastern and Western designers and fashion entrepreneurs on Instagram and Pinterest. Over time, I received genuine appreciation for my taste in colors and styles.

What I thought was a daily routine, putting my clothes together for myself, turned into a dream of sharing my clothing style with the world.

Once randomly, I conveyed this thought to my brother over lunch. He asked me why I wanted to wait for the right time to turn this dream into a reality; he asked, “Why not now?” That’s all it took for me to realize that the future is now. And soon after, I officially launched Shahina Hussain Label in June 2016.

A huge part of this process was coming up with a brand logo. My logo incorporates two leaves symbolizing a gift I received from my mother – a vintage gold brooch. I decided this would make for a perfect logo as I inherited my mother’s artistic qualities.

The designing process was simple – it only took a blank page and a pencil to very naturally create novel ensembles with a blend of Eastern motifs and fabrics with Western cuts.

My label became an extension of my persona and style. Apart from being a full-time nutrition major at University of Illinois Urbana Champaign, I use my time designing and creating a new collection every year. I believe there is nothing better than making someone feel healthy on the inside as well as making them feel beautiful on the outside – a solid foundation for self-confidence.

Currently, I am working with a manufacturer in Delhi, India to create Indo-Western pieces of clothing. My label focuses on solid colors and flowy fabrics with a touch of elegance. In order to make my clothing line available globally, I created an online boutique under the domain “shahinahussainlabel.weebly.com.”

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I personally believe that no journey is ever smooth. Every road has its obstacles and for me it was no different when it came to communication and implementation. It was extremely difficult to convey my designs and ideas virtually to the production company in India. It was frustrating and tedious at times to accurately communicate my ideas back and forth. However, when the finished product was what I envisioned it to be, it was all worth the time and effort. During this process I have also acquired business tactics and skills from my parents who are entrepreneurs. I accredit my growth to family members and mentors who have taught me that hard work, patience, and perseverance are key in order to be successful in any chosen career path.

Shahina Hussain Label – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Shahina Hussain Label is an indo-western luxury semi-formal pret brand that emphasizes femininity and elegance. Our goal is to curate ensembles that hem intricate details with delicate cuts and graceful hues with an aesthetic old world charm that makes women feel beautiful, chic, and confident. The concept behind every design is to keep it elemental yet make a statement. Each collection has a unique look and each garment speaks for itself. The collections are a mix of everything that appeals to my taste – whether it’s the basic differences in the various sleeve styles inspired from the early 1900’s or embroideries and details from vintage Indian architecture and art. Not only this, but I believe the fabric, the color, and the cut in the designs of the garment creates the complete look.

The essence of our brand is that it is simple yet trendy and stylish. The clothes are very versatile and can be worn to give an Eastern or Western look. They can be dressed up or down to suit any occasion. In addition, I find that my clientele can recreate their wardrobes and still keep it affordable. The most rewarding part in this process is when you receive appreciation for your work.

What are your plans for the future? What are you looking forward to or planning for – any big changes?
It has only been a year since I’ve launched my brand, and I envision myself growing as a young entrepreneur. I hope to also eventually establish a global online presence. I plan to launch a new collection every year and participate in various pop up-shop events and fashion shows to get the word out. In addition, I plan to collaborate with fashion/lifestyle bloggers on social media to market my brand. This passion of mine has occupied my time aside from academics. I am just an ordinary girl with big dreams and aspirations – striving to do what I love.
