Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah O’Neill.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I moved to Chicago from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan about seven years ago, and have been working in social media and hospitality ever since. I started S.O. Social, a boutique social media and digital marketing agency, in May of 2017.
I am a digital marketing professional with a background in writing and journalism. With years spent as a freelance writer, my social media approach is from a creative standpoint. Viewing each client as a tale to be told, I work with the template of storytelling to create individual formulas and campaigns. From there, I build each program daily based on resulting analytics and changing social algorithms.
My first experience creating a social media plan from scratch was while working as Assistant General Manager at Chicago Michelin Star restaurant Longman & Eagle.
During nearly three years at Longman, my colleagues and I grew a non-existent Instagram account to one that currently boasts over 20K followers. Following my time at Longman & Eagle, I joined the 16” On Center hospitality group, handling all social media, digital marketing, and paid advertising for The Empty Bottle and Bite Cafe, as well as assisting 16” On Center’s publicity team.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have been lucky so far, but there have definitely been challenges I did not anticipate. Like when your computer crashes and you can’t get into the Apple store for three days.
Figuring out the whole financial side of owning a business was new to me, but I’ve had a lot of fun figuring it all out. In the end, I’m smarter and more efficient because I chose to tackle these challenges myself.
S.O. Social – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
S.O. Social has a passion for helping businesses grow via the use of digital marketing and social media. Using eye-catching photography and creative, attention grabbing content, S.O.S strategizes a formula that sticks to each client’s specific brand, mission statement, and target audience.
Using the template of storytelling and classic advertising techniques, S.O. Social view each business as a tale to be told. The outline of each story is uniquely formatted and used to create a weekly social media plan. From there, we tweak the formula based on weekly analytics and changing social algorithms.
Focusing on too much of one thing can be detrimental to your social presence. If you build creative content without analyzing statistics, it’s like screaming into a void. Paying close attention to analytics while posting lackluster content fails to engage your audience. The key is finding a healthy, consistent mix of the two! I’d say S.O.S does this better than most agencies in Chicago at the moment. I’m really proud of our unique take on social media!
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I’d say starting this business. I’m still in the early stages, but it’s something I never thought I could do until I just decided to do it. It feels right, like I’m where I should be.
