Today we’d like to introduce you to Richard Wolff.
Richard, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
At the age of 13 (circa 1976) I created Wolff’s Gym in my parent’s basement. The gym was a natural extension of my interest in lifting weights. My first job in the fitness industry (circa 1983) was with the YMCA, while I was studying nutrition in college. I went on to earn a degree in Nutritional Science and completed an internship in Medical Nutrition Therapy at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Chicago, IL. After graduating I became a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) and Licensed Dietitian Nutritionist (LDN). My first job was at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield, IL. In 1989 I joined my two brothers as a partner in Wolff Fitness, a small fitness center that focused on strength training. After 21 years in business with my brothers I went out on my own and founded MEDFITNESS.
MEDFITNESS is a strength training studio that specializes in efficient, evidence-based personal training. Our core focus is On-Demand Strength Training(TM). A training system we developed in 2009 that provides personal training without appointments or high prices. We supervise over 1000 strength workouts per month and have been featured in Club Industry and Neighbors Magazines for our innovative approach to strength training. Our core purpose is to Make Life Better with innovative strength training programs.
I currently serve on the Health and Wellness Advisory Board at Northern Illinois University and teach as an Adjunct Faculty in the Graduate School of Nutrition. My workshops have been presented to fitness professionals at major universities around the country (University of Pennsylvania, University of California at Los Angeles, Northeastern University, San Francisco State University) and my writing has been featured in Weightlifting USA, Nautilus Americas Fitness Magazine, Personal Fitness Professional, Club Industry Magazine, The Daily Herald and the Kane County Chronicle.
I have served as a consultant to the Discovery Health Channel, the American Cancer Society and Health Management Resources (HMR).
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
In 2009, when I founded MEDFITNESS, the Great American Depression was making it very difficult to find new customers to grow our new company. I ended up selling and cashing in everything I had (home, car, personal possessions, retirement investments, personal savings, etc,) and living paycheck to paycheck as I worked 70+ hours a week to grow the company over the next several years.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the MEDFITNESS story. Tell us more about the business.
MEDFITNESS is a small strength training studio that specializes in efficient, evidence-based personal training. In 2009 we created a training system called On-Demand Strength Training(TM). On-Demand Strength Training(TM) provides personal training without appointments or high prices. Our system allows our members to work out when they want (no appointments needed) while paying a price that is 60 percent less than conventional appointment-based personal training. Since founding the company in 2009 (in the middle of the Great American Depression) we have been able to Make Life Better for 100’s of clients while growing the company for eight consecutive years.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
The bad luck (bad timing) of founding the company in the middle of the Great American Depression (April 1st, 2009) became good luck when I told my team we had 2 options. Option 1 – we go out of business. Option 2 – we become a better company and grow our customer base so that we can serve people and communities for years to come. Our destiny turned out to be the latter – we figured out how to become a company that focuses on Continuous Improvement. This trajectory ended up being a blessing in disguise as we slowly transformed ourselves into a profitable company that provides industry leading outcomes with an innovative training system.
