Meet Rebecca Passarelli of Chic Concepts Salon in Roselle

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Passarelli.

Rebecca, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
As far back as I could remember I always had a fixation with hair and make-up. I would always cut my dolls hair and put my mother’s makeup on them. When I was 5 or 6 years old I cut my own hair thinking I could replicate a hair style I saw on tv, needless to say my mother wasn’t too happy since it was right before school pictures. As I got older I started to take it more seriously and my love for cosmetology started to grow. When I turned 14 I started to work at a family friend’s salon shampooing and sweeping, I absolutely loved it. I would help where ever could but my attention would always be on the stylists work. I knew that I would be doing this for the rest of my life and I had to get started as soon as possible. I worked hard to graduate high school early so I could enroll in cosmology school.

In early 2001 I enrolled at Pivot Point Academy and loved every day of it. There were some very challenging days of learning but I was determined to learn so I could graduate on time and start Cutting & Coloring hair. I worked extremely hard and never missed a day of class and always focused on the task at hand. This led me to graduate top of my class with high honors and many award. I was extremely excited to hit the ground running.

The same year I graduated I had an opportunity to take over and purchase local salon that was established in the late 70’s. That salon was called Chic Concepts Salon I was ecstatic that with a little help from my family I was able to make this happen. This was the start of not only becoming a hair stylist but also owning my own business. I was only 18 years old and it felt like I was on a roller coaster. There was a lot of learning that had to be done and in some cases I learned the hard way. There were a lot of curve balls such as needing to learn payroll, contract negotiation, utilities along with making sure or current and new customers where getting the best service that we could provide. Like most things in life when you have passion and love for what you do everything else works out along the way. I had a lot of help from the current employees at the time which I’m proud to say, majority are still working with me today.

We are currently on our way to celebrate our 15 year anniversary in a completely remodeled salon this November 2017. I am fortunate enough to have fantastic stylist that also love and have a true passion for hair & nails. I truly believe we are a family that is always continuing to learn more and provide new hair trends for our clientele. We focus on having a relaxed environment for our clientele. We are blessed to have such wonderful clients that led us to be recognized for the last 3 years running as a Top Pick Best of the Best Salon by /Daily Herald. We have also been recognized this year by The Knot for best of Weddings.

Chic Concepts Salon is also one of only a handful of salons that has a Certified Redken Hair colorist. This is a true honor for me.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I had a lot of learning to do. Running a business is a lot of hard work. As I mentioned earlier it was truly like a rollercoaster ride. When I would work on a client’s hair and be able to give them exactly what they were looking for I would be on cloud nine. On the opposite end when bills where do or payroll was needed to be done it would keep me up at night trying to figure it all out. Some say I was too young for all of it but I knew that I would figure it out. I am very fortunate that my boyfriend at the time and now my husband Giorgio Passarelli has been extremely helpful over the past 15 years. We both had to learn a lot about running a salon and we continue to grow and learn still together today. We had to learn not only how to run a salon but also when to leave it at the door and not always bring business home. I am proud to say with all the learning curves and ups and downs we are both on the same page to make sure our stylist are happy along with our clientele are getting the best service that we can offer.
