Today we’d like to introduce you to Rana Blohm.
Rana, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
In 2014 I made the most terrifying and important change in my life. I left a lucrative, high-level position within a corporate restaurant group to follow my passion for helping people through nutrition and health education.
I had spent the last 20 years in the restaurant and hospitality industry. I loved mentoring people while working in the fast-paced environment of a busy and successful restaurant. However, after spending years struggling with the same issues most people have (stress, not eating well and not getting enough exercise) I came to the realization that I could use those same skills to pursue a career in Health Coaching.
I started researching schools and found a certification program through the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. With the amazing support of my husband and a weekend gig, I was able to start Avalon Health Coaching (I’m a huge medieval history nerd). Within the year I was working out of a holistic practitioner shared space, Tribe Healing Arts, and started working for my current employer Two Hands Chiropractic and Acupuncture as a medical assistant and Health Coach.
By the Spring of 2018, I will have completed my Associates Degree. I am also working on a personal training certification and plan on enrolling in an online program to complete a bachelor in Health Education and Promotion.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Smooth is definitely not the word I would use to describe my change of path. A lot of people thought I was crazy to leave a job I was making very good money at to start a career in something most had never heard of.
Fortunately, because of the current Health Care climate, I believe Health Coaches will truly be on the front lines trying to help people shift some of the habits in their lifestyle to healthier choices. Finding solutions to some of my own health issues has been greatly rewarding and I love helping my clients do the same. The change of careers certainly has been challenging both emotionally and financially, but I would do it all again without hesitation.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Avalon Health Coaching story. Tell us more about the business.
I started Avalon Health Coaching as a way to use my skills as an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach to educate and support my clients in achieving their health goals through simple lifestyle and behavior adjustments.
I have a special interest in working with people who have or suspect that they have food sensitivities and intolerances, want to reduce or eliminate their sugar intake, or want to learn more about living gluten-free (it’s not just about food). Shortly after beginning to work with Two Hands Chiropractic and under Dr. Fritsch’s care, I discovered that my own health struggles were the result of Hashimoto’s disease, an autoimmune thyroid condition. I enjoy taking what I’ve learned and applying those principles to help my clients discover the root cause of their symptoms, helping them determine how simple changes to diet and lifestyle can help them.
What sets me apart is my candid and realistic approach. I am by no means a buff and perfect human, which I think makes me the best type of person to be a health coach. Also, I think I’m damn funny so people should be prepared to be entertained.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Luck has had nothing to do with anything I have set out to accomplish in this life. You have to take risks, learn from your mistakes and be totally and completely willing to fail. It’s all about picking yourself up and keeping it. I also have amazing friends and family as support for whom I am unbelievably grateful.
