Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Mandel.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I first picked up a camera seriously in 2011, and my love for the art has grown from there! I have travelled all over the world, from Belize to Israel to London, all while documenting my experiences. I worked as a second shooter for weddings for 3 years, and eventually started my own wedding and travel photography business in 2017. I am thrilled that it has introduced me not only to a love for capturing moments, but to lovely people from all walks of life.
Please tell us about your art.
I enjoy photographing moments. Be it a wedding, proposal, glint of light in the trees, or first glance between strangers. My style of photography is joyful, fresh, bright, and authentic. I hope that people take away a sense of timelessness and fun from my images. Each picture is meant to tell a story, as I am following in my great grandfather’s footsteps, after he had invented the Mandelette. The Mandelette became the first prototype for the Polaroid camera, and I am honored to carry out his vision for generations to come.
Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
My advice for other artists is to practice as much as you can and stay inspired. Write often, explore other mediums, and gain inspiration from unlikely places. I wish that I learned from other photographers earlier in my career. Taking a job as a second shooter for weddings was absolutely the best thing I could have done, both professionally and for personal development. It taught me to be humble in my approach with clients, where to be at the right moments, and how to provide and excellent client experience.
