Today we’d like to introduce you to Neesha Stringfellow and Ebony “Khavoni” Roberts.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Ebony: So, we met about five years ago at church. My husband and I attended one of Wes & Neesha’s Marriage Bootcamp’s. And after attending the retreat that year, found out that we both worked in the same industry.
Ebony: After about three years of knowing each other, we began to work at the same salon suites and eventually came to share about 100 sq feet of space. That was crazy, the space was so tiny, but we made it work.
Ebony: Towards the end of the lease, we both decided not to renew and started trying to figure out our next move (which did not include opening another salon after we had owned a few of them in times past). Then Neesha passed this placed literally right down the street from where we were. And just like that we opened NK Artistry Professional Salon Care almost two years ago.
Ebony: God truly has met us with our needs and wants when it came to this place. We were and still are truly excited to have been blessed with a four-station salon that is about 800 or so sq feet. Each and every time our clients come into the salon they rave about how this is their favorite salon out of all the others we previously owned. So exciting to hear and that we didn’t allow our fears to hinder us from a plan that was and is bigger than us.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Ebony: Knock on wood, it has been smooth sailing. Just the minor things/hiccups of salon ownership. The management company that oversees the facilities have been the best at handling situations in a timely manner.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Neesha: We are a hair salon/training center. We offer continuing education classes for stylists as well as service our client’s hair care needs. We specialize and promote the health of the hair using the top of the line professional products and equipment to help achieve this goal.
Neesha: So far the moments that have made us the proudest to have this amazing space is giving back! We have had two successful back to school drives, where we have donated over 120 packed book bags to various organizations like DCFS, single moms & Lucky Kid Foundation. We have also provided blessing bags to the woman of Pacific Garden Missions full of things for hygiene. We honored a few mothers with makeovers for Mother’s Day and was featured on WGN, as well as ABC for a huge prom send off for a very deserving young lady. Additional prom’s, 8th-grade graduation’s and dances, etc. and it won’t stop there. We have so many great things in the works so stay tuned!
Neesha: We believe what sets us apart, is we not only provide professional salon service, but our client’s are family and we are able to minister to them on a spiritual level. They come and just sit most times not even having appointments. We would say that is a huge accomplishment that most times takes years to build that type of trust from the consumer. The atmosphere is so peaceful and inviting.
What were you like growing up?
Neesha: Growing up as the oldest of eight children and one of four girls, I found myself always styling my mom and sister’s hair. As far back as ten years old, I can remember having a passion for beauty and fashion. My ultimate goal has been to see the best in people. Giving people hope in encouraging them to enhance their inner and outer beauty. I have a passion for building relationships and networking. I truly believe each person who crosses your path in this life is for a purpose. Another motto I live by is the saying “life will allow you to have lemons, but Lemons make lemonade.” My life has seen many obstacles, but my personality has remained the same in that, with God’s help I am able to not fall victim to the circumstances around me. This quality is one I feel sets me apart from others because I am sympathetic to the needs of those around me, they not only receive hair care but healing for the whole body. It has been a journey, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world. Networking and connecting people is another tool I use to help people reach their fullest potential.
Ebony: Wow, so, I have always liked to create, cook, use colors, sew by hand, anything that would produce something magical. I can remember being in school entering this art contest and creating this powdered blue, heart-shaped pillow with lace and buttons all by hand. My teacher could not believe it and asked to enter me into the statewide art competition. Then, in cosmetology school, I tried my best to set myself apart by creating Avant Garde looks and placed 1st & 2nd place in every competition during school. I absolutely love this industry, the people I am fortunate enough to meet, work with and mentor. I never feel like I know everything, I am ever learning and growing. I’ve been in the industry for almost 20 years and would not change it for anything else. This is the most rewarding experience to see an individual’s life transformed in a way that boosts their esteem and helps them to discover who they really are. In the future, my goal is to open a Cosmetology School to expand the vision God gave me. Thank you to all of those who have ever allowed me to be a part of their lives in any capacity, it truly is an honor to serve you and I look forward to more of it!
