Meet Mitchell Andrews of The Plexus Groupe in Downtown & Deer Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mitchell Andrews.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Mitchell. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Over 30 years ago, my two partners and I met, while working together on the insurance carrier side as field underwriters. We worked with hundreds of insurance brokers/consultants, and saw an opportunity to create an organization that helped make corporate insurance (Commercial & Benefits) more strategic within our client’s business, and customized to their unique needs. Then we set out to attract the best talent we could find, and created a culture strives to become part of the fabric of our clients.

The Plexus culture and our relationships with our clients is embodied within our name. Plexus is a Latin word meaning an interwoven network. We expanded the definition to “an interwoven network of trust”, to represent the true partnerships we develop with our clients and our carrier partners. This trust has allowed us to grow our business primarily through referrals, as our offering is unique to the insurance brokerage/consulting space.

Most business look at insurance as a transaction. At Plexus, we view insurance as a noble cause. Ensuring that if something bad happens to a business or a person, the coverage’s we have for them will make everything good again.

Has it been a smooth road?
You don’t know what you don’t know, so growth has its surprises… both good and bad. Our biggest challenge has been identifying the right talent for our unique culture and providing them with a roadmap for long-term success in their lives. Early in our formation, we did not always understand how to build teams that worked well together. We asked for help, tried a number of techniques and tools, and finally found a formula that we believe works well. We still have room to improve, as everyone can get better, but having won best places to work for the last seven years in a row tells us we are on to something!

So, as you know, we’re impressed with The Plexus Groupe – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Plexus is in the corporate insurance consulting/brokerage business, meaning we help corporations ensure their assets, liabilities, and their employee’s health/retirement.

We study a company’s business, so we can understand how we can minimize their downside risk. Put another way, we ensure that if something bad happens, the business can continue. This requires us to ask lots of questions, listen to the answers, and then dig some more to make sure we truly understand where the risks are. On the health/retirement side, we ask a lot of questions about the corporate culture and learn about each clients philosophy around total compensation. By truly understanding the mentality of our clients and why they might lose sleep at night, we can best advise them on how to appropriately ensure their balance sheet and human capital.

Our difference really boils down to our curiosity, and desire to do what is right. Once we know what really matters, we can work with the insurance carriers to design the right programs for our clients. Our process takes more time, but we are proud of the outcome we deliver to our clients, and our growth shows we are bringing value to an otherwise stagnant industry.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
What do I like best about the city? Chicago is inviting to everyone who comes to the city. Known as “the city of big shoulders” Chicago supports everyone by giving you a chance and then expecting you to do the same to the next person you meet. Having lived on both the west and east coast, and a few spots in between, citizens of Chicago are like no other city in their willingness to help one another.

What I like the least about the city? I have to say our inability to solve the violence and budgetary issues. For all the great things our city has accomplished, I believe our lack of honesty and focus on having a plan to solve these issues will undermine what our forefathers built for us.
