Today we’d like to introduce you to Meghana Prasad.
Meghana, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always loved everything makeup, hair, and beauty. When I was in college, I worked in the cosmetics department in Macy’s for some extra cash. While working there, I learned about freelancing as a career and it piqued my interest. I knew I didn’t want to work in an office 9-5, and this sounded perfect for me! So, I moved home and decided to try it out. I started by working for other artists and assisting them until I could build my own business and clientele. Once I had been in the industry for a few years, I decided to go back to school to get my esthetics license. While there, I also discovered my love of skin care. I am so happy to have found these two things, I love being a part of people’s weddings and I love helping people to transform their skin.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There are always ups and downs with freelancing. Working in the wedding industry, you have to be a good planner and budgeter because you are going to work a lot in the summer and a lot less in the winter. Thankfully, I have been able to get a hold of this pretty easily and all it takes is some pre-planning to ensure the year goes smoothly.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I primarily do hair and makeup for weddings, though I also do commercial work and other events as well occasionally. With makeup, I try to help my clients feel like the most beautiful version of themselves. I like to keep my style pretty natural while enhancing my client’s best features. In my skin care practice, I work holistically, focusing on all of the causes of your skin care issues. I help my clients to design a full regimen to ensure that they are meeting their skin care goals. I particularly love working with my acne clients, as I was an acne sufferer in the past and I know how self-conscious it can make you feel and I love helping people get past it and learn to love their skin! What I love about what I do and what I am most proud of is how I make people feel. We as women are so often being told in one way or another that we’re not good enough, and helping people to see their own beauty is a really special job.
What were you like growing up?
I was a girly girl through and through, so it shouldn’t have been a huge surprise to anyone who knew me as a child that I grew up to work in the beauty industry. I loved everything hair and makeup, I would always practice any chance I got! I was a very talkative child, and loved to read. I also was obsessed with animals (and still am)!
