Meet Megan Banias of Lil Epic Design in Wicker Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Banias.

Megan, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Lil Epic Design started as a little Invitation and Stationary shop on Etsy. Chyrel, my sister and business partner, started making individual paper flowers while she was working at Paper Source and one day she was asked to make a paper flower wall with the flowers she made for a wedding. That request marked the start of our Flower Walls and we started getting requests for walls through pictures and word of mouth. We would get asked to help plan and decorate our friends and family weddings which allowed us to understand the process better and taught us to become more resourceful and thrifty since we were always trying to stay within a small budget. What started as a company that only did Invitations and flower walls (and functioned out of a basement) grew into full on event decor and planning services basically by accident!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It was definitely not a smooth road. Chyrel and I never had any experience in running a business so we definitely had to learn what was right and wrong the hard way. We put our heads down and hustled to get clients and get our name out there so we took on a lot of unpaid opportunities to gain more experience and exposure. In the beginning, it was a pain just to get our flower walls from point A to point B in a tiny Nissan Sentra so a lot of the time we had to borrow our parent’s 15-year-old minivan! There was a lot of late nights, taking naps in cars, and running around, but we are eternally grateful for all of our friends and family members who have helped us get through this. Our parents never blinked when we had to pack their van to the brim with decor items or when we filled their garage, basement, and attic space with wedding rentals and paper flowers!

Please tell us about Lil Epic Design.
Lil Epic Design is a unique design company that focuses on creating one-of-a-kind, yet affordable, events for people on the go. We are most known for our flower walls that can go as large as 30 or 40 ft. in length. We can custom design stationary and invitations, we do centerpiece and floral decor. Lil Epic Design also functions as a great wedding planning and coordinating company that merges event design and execution into one seamless team.

Situated in the heart of Chicago, I am most proud of that fact that Lil Epic Design is a team of young, driven and creative people. Our team brings their spunky personalities with sophisticated style to their projects while staying within budget, timeline and theme.

I feel that our personalities really set us apart from others. At Lil Epic Design we are looking to make sure that your event is as perfect as it can be, but we are also looking into your best interests. We want to make sure that you are able to enjoy every second of your event, but that you are also not breaking the bank as well and our drive, passion, and practicality help us to achieve that.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If we had to start over, the thing that we would have done differently would probably be that we wouldn’t have had such a long name in the beginning. Our name was Lil Epic Event Design and when it was shortened it was mistaken for L.E.E.D which is also a certification for environmentally friendly buildings. We shortened our name 2 years ago and it was a really good thing.
