Meet Meg Kinnerk of Mickey’s Dream Vacations in Mt. Greenwood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Meg Kinnerk.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Meg. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
9+ years ago I was working as a successful mortgage broker but after the housing collapse of 2008 I needed to find a new path. I had just had my second son and knew I needed something less stressful but also that would give me the freedom to work from home.

We had been to Disney World and on several other trips with my oldest son multiple times and I was helping all of my friends plan their trips, one of them wanted to pay me and that is when it clicked. I thought to myself that there has to be a need for this service in the market. With the tech age, it seemed that Travel Agents were obsolete but I knew that with Disney there are so many facets to the parks so I got connected with a Travel Agency that I did my training with, learned a few things but in the end, was never paid.

After 9 months or so of working essentially for free I decided enough was enough and Mickey’s Dream Vacations was born! I started Mickey’s Dream Vacations with the goal of helping families navigate the ins and outs of their vacation and creating amazing memories.

We are celebrating our 7th birthday this December and I couldn’t be happier of our growth. We started out as a Disney focused agency but that has evolved over the years to expand to more destinations.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There has definitely been struggles along the way. No one tells you that owning your own business can be one of the most stressful things but also rewarding you can do. Some days you feel like you were punched in the gut others you are on cloud nine. Everyday in this industry is different, I love that every family I work with is different so it definitely keeps me on my toes.

I am fortunate to have an amazing team of agents that work with me everyday- we laugh, we cry and together we make magic happen. I couldn’t do this without them!

Mickey’s Dream Vacations – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are the Disney experts! We get personal with our clients and get to know them, their children, their vacation wants and needs. This helps us to customize each vacation tailored to what they want. Every family travels differently and we embrace that. You are not just a number with us.

After booking with us we send exclusive destination guides that are packed with tons of information they will not find on google. We take a personal approach to our clients and treat their vacations as if they were our own.

While Disney is what we are “known” for we have become a top producer with other destinations as well. Last year we became one of 5 Gourmet Inclusive Vacation Consultant agencies with Karisma in the area. Karisma is the brand that owns the Nickelodeon Resort in Punta Cana and several other adults only and family destination resorts in the Caribbean and Mexico. Two years ago, I was invited to be part of Disney’s prestigious Earmarked Travel Advisory Council, this is an exclusive group of twenty agency owners who come together each month to talk about the needs of our industry when it comes to selling Disney. Being on EMTAC for the last two years has been an amazing experience that I will never forget.

For the last 6 years we have been awarded Disney’s Top Producer award for its Earmarked agencies, we have also been a member of Funjet’s exclusive 500 club for the last 3 years.

Some agencies charge fees to get prices or help plan the trip but we do not do that. The suppliers pay us after you travel so we do not feel the need to markup the prices more just to pad our bottom line. We pride ourselves on fantastic personalized service. We want you to have the vacation of a lifetime so you tell your friends and keep coming back to us year after year for whatever adventure you want to take. Referrals are the best compliment we can receive and we know that good service leads to referrals. Service to our clients is our #1 priority.

We are a small but mighty agency. Many agencies have 100s of agents, we are an agency of only 17 agents. With this small number of agents we are still able to sell millions, consistently win awards and remain a close knit agency that is always helping each other. We celebrate each other’s victories on a daily basis.

The most rewarding part of our job is seeing the smiling faces and hearing how much the client loved their vacation. From the Grandma who took the whole family on a Disney Cruise to the couple celebrating their honeymoon in the Caribbean, each one is special and we love it!

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
True success is defined by how happy you are, when you wake up in the morning do you like the person you see in the mirror? Are you happy? This is something I teach my boys on a daily basis. Success isn’t about the number of zeros on your paycheck or the awards on your desk. Yes, those are all great but true success is about happiness.

In my business, every day I find success in the phone call from a happy client who just returned from her vacation and is raving about everything I planned for her. That is success to me when it comes to my business. Happy clients=success.
