Meet Marquita Daniel of Marquita Daniel Enterprises and MD Collection in Lansing

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marquita Daniel.

Marquita, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
February 2013 not knowing anything about hair, I enrolled in John Amico School of Hair Design. I completed the Cosmetology program in March of 2014. During this time, I developed a passion for healthy hair. As a student, I took pictures and videos and shared it on my social media, not knowing that I was laying a foundation for my brand.

The Marquita Daniel brand has allowed me to land dream opportunities such as, working with agency signed models, being Lead Hairstylist for Black Fashion Week USA, and traveling with celebrity clients. I currently rent a booth at Change of Pace Styling Center in Lansing Illinois. While servicing my clientele I recognized common issues with the scalp and hair. Instead of covering up the issue with a pretty hairstyle, I wanted to give my clients a real solution to their hair and scalp problem. March 2017, I enrolled in World Trichology Society’s Trichology program. January 2018, I will be a Certified Trichologist, which is someone who specializes in hair loss problems such as baldness, hair breakage and itchy/flaking scalp. I will also be able to treat all forms of alopecia. July 2017 MD Collection hair care products was introduced to the world, where we offer quality products that promote healthy hair.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
During my journey, I’ve overcame a lot of bumps in the road. While attending Cosmetology school me and my 2 children live in 1 room at my grandmother’s house. I had to decide between keeping my apartment or finishing school. So I made the sacrifice of having my own space, privacy and comfort to sleeping in the same bed with my 7 and 3 yr. olds.

On top of my crazy living situation, a month before I was supposed to finish school my car was stolen with all of my hair tools and school books in the trunk. I had to depend on other people for rides to and from school, and also rides to pick up my children from school. Half of my tools were replaced, and I had to borrow from my classmates and even sometimes go without.

Once I left school, the training wheels were off. Although I knew how to do hair, I had no idea how to start a business from scratch. In the beginning, I struggled with having a constant flow of clients. Back then paying weekly booth rent was a struggle. I’ve spent countless nights up researching the business and how to manage it in order to turn things around.
