Meet Marie Vetter of Chicago Hearing Services in Portage Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marie Vetter.

Marie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
As an audiology doctoral student, I knew I wanted to have a positive impact on people suffering from hearing loss. I soon realized the best way to do this would be owning my own practice. I was lucky enough to be recommended for an internship with 2 practices in Chicago.

I came to Chicago and I interviewed with Michael Santucci, Au.D. at Sensphonics Hearing Conservation and Steven Wolinsky, Au.D., the owner of Chicago Hearing Services. Based on the office hours at both businesses, I was able to do externships with both of these unique practices. Sensaphonics focused primarily on hearing loss prevention solutions within the music industry and Chicago Hearing Services was a neighborhood practice focusing on patient care for those with hearing loss. This gave me the opportunity to see two different sides of my chosen profession. As my externships concluded, my desire to focus on hearing loss patient care was reinforced. I was lucky enough to be offered a position with Dr. Wolinsky at Chicago Hearing Services. Dr. Wolinsky became a mentor for me both personally and professionally. He taught me how to care for patients and gave me a solid foundation on how to run a successful Audiology practice. His guidance was invaluable.

I was able to purchase Chicago Hearing Services in January of 2016 upon Dr. Wolinsky’s retirement. I was able to hone my craft under a fine audiologist for 7 years. This gave me confidence to jump into owning a business.

Becoming a female small business owner has been an adventure I would not trade. I have wonderful patients and a great staff. I get to wake up every day and go to MY business and practice a trade I love.

Has it been a smooth road?
Business ownership in the healthcare industry presents a unique set of challenges. Those challenges must be met head on with a common sense professionalism and a healthy dose of optimism. Patient education and providing exceptional service has also minimized some of those struggles.

My mentors always taught me that adapting to change was a necessity to move forward in business. Staying static in a small business is courting failure. I have taken this advice to heart and it has helped my business’s growth faster than I expected.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Chicago Hearing Services story. Tell us more about the business.
Chicago Hearing Services provides hearing healthcare for school-age children and adults. We specialize in minimizing the effects of hearing loss by providing solutions to help our patients improve their quality of life. We do more than sell hearing aids; we counsel patients and families so that their success with hearing is maximized. Chicago Hearing Services always provides state of the art technology along with evidence-based hearing care. We treat each patient as an individual and really customize their hearing care plan for them.

Chicago Hearing Services is proud of having satisfied patients. Some of our patients have been coming to our office since its inception in 1990. We are truly like a family. We provide a welcoming environment and even a cup of coffee!

Chicago Hearing Services goes above providing audiology care. We strive to put the patient first by offering flexible hours and a welcoming environment. Too often at big box stores or dealers, the patient is treated as just a number and the high amount of turnover doesn’t allow the patient to feel cared for. Chicago Hearing Service patients know that they will be seeing Dr. Marie Vetter. We ensure the patient can be seen early morning, late evening, or on Saturdays.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The audiology/hearing industry is rapidly changing. With the development of digital sound processing, we continue to see more rapid growth and change than in other industries. This rapid development is exciting for us! I enjoy learning about new technological advancements and things that can help our patients communicate more easily with friends, family, and coworkers. I predict more remote adjustments and totally integrated hearing devices for the patient will continue to improve.

Hearing, as a sense, impacts every facet of one’s day to day life. Due to this, Audiology will always be needed. It has been named one of the top 10 professions, and I expect it to be for many more years.

Our industry will also see more hearables and integration of lifestyle wearables into earpieces. It will become more acceptable to wear something in our ears!

With the passage of the over-the-counter hearing aid act, it will change even more. This rapidly changing trend can also leave the public very confused, overwhelmed, and misinformed. My goal as a hearing professional and expert, is to help guide the public so that they are provided with proper information and solutions.
