Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Mallinder.
Maria, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I knew I wanted to pursue a career in hair design at an early age. In high school, I was nominated the “Most Creative Hairstyles” in the senior yearbook. I was always sitting in the hallways styling student body hair. I graduated from Pivot Point International Beauty School in 2000 and immediately got hired to apprentice under the most reputable colorist in Chicagoland. Gina King, my mentor, was originally trained by Vidal Sassoon (a pioneer in the industry). After completing 3 years of color training. I partnered with Gina to open “Salon Mor”, a top rated Goldcoast salon.
Within that decade, I styled for publications, commercials, fashion shows and colored celebrity clientele. I pride myself on achieving desired looks while preserving the integrity of the hair. I love my clients and my craft and feel blessed to have both in my life.
For years I have been searching for more natural products that have less toxins and chemicals, but that could still achieve desired looks for my clientele. About 6 months ago, a fellow stylist introduced me to Monat hair care products. Monat is an anti-aging, botanically based hair care line that promotes hair growth and repairs damage. Having tried every product under the sun, it’s needless to say that I was skeptical to try this, but I did and have fallen madly in love. So I decided to join the company and share these amazing products with the world.
I consider myself a suburban mommy entrepreneur, In addition to raising my 4 children, I run my own salon suite called ” Modern Hair Boutique” and am an independent consultant for Monat Global, a direct sales company.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
With 4 kids in tow it is never a smooth road. In terms of my salon business, I have had many ups and downs.
I started out on the Gold coast and since have worked at about 4 or 5 salons in the burbs. I have taken years off with the kids and even tried to switch career paths.
Nevertheless, something always brings me back to hair. Each time you leave or take time off it’s like starting a new business all over again. Throughout the years I’ve had fellow stylist tear me down because I offered a different hair experience and was super passionate about everything I did. Also, as I added direct sales to my side hustle, I have experienced many other challenges that I feel would discourage many people. From a million NOs to “is this a pyramid scheme?” selling shampoo through network marketing is not an easy task. But the biggest challenge I face is balancing motherhood and a successful career.
Modern Hair Boutique – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Modern Hair Boutique is my personal salon suite. I am a one woman show. I offer on-trend hair color, cuts and styles and specialize in color corrections and difficult hair. My main focus is to educate clients so that they can easily replicate their desired styles. I want them to be able to manage their hair with ease. I pride myself on achieving desired looks while keeping the integrity of the hair intact. I am also an independent distributor for Monat Global which is my natural botanically based hair care line that grows and repairs hair. Monat falls in line with my vision to achieve desired looks in a more organic way with less chemicals and toxins. What sets me apart from others is my passion for creating quality hair colors and cuts without sacrificing the integrity of the hair.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
In my opinion, true balance between work and home life is success. I used to think success was working runways and having celebrity clientele but I have come to a point in my life where if I could run a constantly growing business and take care of my family in the best possible way, all while helping humanity in any which way I can, I would define that as SUCCESS…
