Meet Lisa Marie Schultz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Marie Schultz.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Bring out your inner artist and have an amazing time doing it! That has been my quote of life. I have over 25 years of experience in the hospitality and decorating industry. This all started with my mom who was a chef. She brought me into the industry when I was 16 and my passion for the arts grew from there. It started with food, then it went on to event/party planning, decorating and decor pallet boards. Everything I created had to look pretty and polished, or at least I attempted to look make it look that way!

My girlfriends and sisters joke and ask if I ever do anything half way. That’s alright, they always were the beneficiary to this, as it was their engagement, bridal and baby shower parties that I was planning and putting my passion into. I loved seeing the expression on their faces the day of the party, when it all comes together.

Glitter Your Pallet came to be when I decided to plan a Pilates and Prosecco birthday party for myself. (I’m a huge believer that every party needs a theme) I was looking to make wood signs directing my guests to the cucumber spa water, cool towels and the zen area. After using the chalk paint, waxing techniques and distressing the clean re-purposed lumber, I felt an overwhelming sense of accomplishment. And I loved. loved the way the finished project looked. Enhancing the perfect imperfections in the wood was probably the most addicting. The next thing you know, I was needing more lumber to make more things not party related.

My love for decor pallet boards caught on with friends and family. They wanted to create a sign or quote on a board and asked me to help. I started to throw painting parties at my home. So many parties that I asked my fiancé who is superintendent /carpenter by trade, to build me Pinterest inspired tables to host more people. Thank goodness he was supportive!

The next thing you knew, I was asking a girlfriend to design a logo, my brother to create a website, the girl next door attending UIC to help with marketing materials and girlfriends and sisters to help instruct larger workshops/parties Oh yes and buying lots of glitter! It’s been an amazing journey thus far and I am so appreciative how far we have all come together.

Please tell us about your art.
Glitter Your Pallet focuses on offering a cheerful, upbeat and therapeutic DIY decor pallet painting workshop. The inspiration is that each board is an urban art created by the individual artist/participant themselves. The final result is a one of a kind statement piece that offers pride and a sense of accomplishment upon completion. No two boards are ever the same. At each work shop we offer over 40 designs to choose. Our painting designs include inspirational, family, love, sports, seasonal themes and personalized last name quotes.

All our wood pallet boards are 100% sustainable. We start with 23-foot-long shipping crates that are used to ship stainless steel airline parts. No vegetation, chemicals or anything living come in contact with the wood. Glitter Your Pallet is proud to offer clean wood while being environmentally friendly and leaving the precious forests intact.

We contract with a local farmer to dismantle, cut, sand and assemble the pallet boards. They are delivered to us 200 boards at a time in their natural state. From there members of the GYP team dedicate a Saturday morning where we stain, paint and distress each board ourselves to create the perfect patina! Our goal is to enhance the perfect imperfections of the wood. These mornings include members from the GYP team, During the 4 hours we laugh, enjoy each other’s company, snack, drink, create and collaborate.

We strive to keep it fresh and trendy, therefore at certain times of the year we offer unique handmade wood projects. These workshops include our ever loved 2 1/2 foot tall sleds, farmhouse centerpiece boxes, trays, hearts, snowmen, coffins/tombstones, bunting banners and a 2 1/2 foot tall standing bunny. This is the 2nd spring we are offering an oversized all wood wheelbarrow workshop. These looks amazing in your flower garden and can be rolled throughout your yard.

Since inception of Glitter Your Pallet 2 1/2 years ago, we have added 8 additional instructor opportunities and our farmer has added a wood milling shop on to his land.

Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
First and foremost, absolutely love and adore the work you do. There’s no doubt that running a business takes a lot of time. In the end it has to satisfy you. Be prepared for a lot of late hours. Lots and lots! Also, be prepared for the laundry to pile up!

Get to learn the ins and outs of social media. My brother told me, “At first, you will feel like you’re talking to yourself.” Keep at it. Do not stop. Post great content of your product and your following will come. Websites are key. I only wish I could find the time to take classes on becoming more IT savvy. Build a great team. Find others who express the passion for your business. In your gut you will know when you find them. Each team member will excel at a certain application. Have them teach the others and vice versa.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
