Meet Lavender Streiff, O.D. of Bensenville Eye Care

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lavender Streiff, O.D.

Dr. Streiff, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I grew up in a family of chiropractors. As a result, I always had an interest in the health care field. After a lot of thought, I decided to pursue optometry and feel fortunate to have found such a wonderful career. It is rewarding to be able to help people and have the opportunity to dabble in various aspects of the field ranging from teaching to business to fashion. In 2004, I completed the residency program at the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center where I focused on ocular disease, low vision and specialty contact lenses. During the next two years, I worked at numerous offices including: ophthalmology practices, nursing homes and opticals. Then, in 2006 I answered a mailer regarding a professional opportunity in Elmhurst, Illinois. I began working at this office in May of 2006. Less than a year later, I began working at the other practice too which was located in Bensenville, Illinois. Almost a year later, I purchased this practice and have since learned so much about running a business and the balance of life. These lessons have come to me through trial and error, my mentors (my mother, owner of two chiropractic clinics, and the doctor I purchased the practice from and still work for) and my patient staff.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a wonderful challenge and I’ve learned so much in my nine years as a business owner. Since purchasing the practice, I’ve implemented electronic health records, hired/fired several staff members, hired several doctors, purchased equipment annually and run the business from another state and another country. Every year seems to become more complex than the previous year but since I have such an amazing support system of hardworking and dedicated technicians and doctors, I am able to ‘have it all’. The balance of work and home has shifted for me since getting married two years ago to my active duty Army husband and having a child one year ago. My husband has been stationed in Montgomery, Alabama and Seoul, Korea these past two years. My hours at the office have been reduced though I have been commuting back to see patients who prefer to see me. After several more years of potential travel, my family plans to settle back in Chicagoland and my schedule will be expanded. Until then, I am fully appreciative of being able to stay in touch with my office via email, phone and text.

Our staff of technicians and doctors sets us apart from the competition. Our knowledge, dedication and patient-centered focus is exceptional.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Aside from the honor of taking care of my patients and being a part-time clinical instructor at my alma mater, the Illinois College of Optometry, for nine years, I am quite proud of last year’s increase in sales from the prior year. Last year was the toughest year to date since I was not physically at my office most of the time. This accomplishment speaks volumes to how impressive my staff has been in going above and beyond to ensure that our office succeeds. We all worked hard for this triumph!
