Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Muttschall.
Lauren, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
It’s a funny story, but starting a photography business was never anything I had ever thought of. I liked photography and had fun doing it in my spare time, but I never even thought of making money doing it. I worked in the family law field, so after assisting people through their divorce, custody battle, etc., I needed something happy to turn to and that was photography. People ended up starting to ask me to snap some family photos or would tell me I had an eye for it. I assumed they were just being nice. But now, here I am, with an actual photography business that I absolutely love. I couldn’t imagine my life without it. I’m still in the legal field, just not family law anymore, but one day soon, photography will be my everything, aside from my husband, of course.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
In the beginning, it was a struggle because I thought I had to have the newest and best of everything. I lost sight of the fact that people wanted to hire me for my abilities and customer service, not because they had a care in the world about what kind of camera was in my hand. It’s then I realized I needed to focus in on my skills and really hone my craft. I grew so much not only as a photographer but also as a person.
Starting a business sounds like such a fun idea, and then reality has this super awesome way of smacking you in the face. There’s so much that goes into creating a legal business that I had no clue about until I was doing it. Licensing, taxes, insurance, contracts, trademarks, budgets, credit, marketing, etc. Basically, money, money, money. Photography is NOT cheap. With each new booking, I’m able to grow my business and not in the sense of what’s in the bank, because it never stays there. Each booking helps me pay for important business expenses whether on the business side or creative side of things – taxes, educational courses, marketing, etc.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with L Christine Photography – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
L Christine Photography is a customer service based company. I am 100% aware that without referrals, I’m as good as done, much like many small businesses. When people book with me, I want them to know that not only are they going to get great portraits, but they’ll also get a great experience. I want to be your lifelong photographer – births, birthdays, holidays, school days, weddings, etc. Please just don’t ask for pet photography – I have terrible allergies and it kills me that I can’t play with your puppies or take those photos for you!
I want every experience to be one-of-a-kind whether it be a simple family portrait session or a wedding. I’ve had several brides that were complete strangers when we started working together and are now friends. I love being someone that anyone can count on. I had one bride tell me I should have been her bridesmaid because I was doing more for her than they were. I’m THAT person. I’m your photographer, but if you’re like, oh my gosh, I need a drink, I’m your girl! Even when it comes to family sessions, we all know how cold it gets here in Chicago. I show up for sessions with hot chocolate, blankets and hand/feet warmers to make sure we all stay warm.
When people tell me the experience was so much better than they thought and they’d totally do it again, I know I did my job. I can walk away smiling knowing they’re happy without even seeing their photos yet.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
L Christine Photography is definitely my future. One day, I don’t know when, but one day, I will leave the legal field to focus on photography. It’s become my dream and everything I’m working for. To be able to wake up and do what you love, I don’t know, it just doesn’t get any better than that!
