Meet Laura George of Laura George Consulting in Lincolnshire

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura George.

Laura, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Throughout my life, both during my academic and professional careers, I have always loved to write and help people tell their stories. After attending Duke University and majoring in psychology, I pursued a career in advertising for a few years before attending Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management for my MBA. After graduation, I worked in brand management at Kimberly-Clark and then served as the Marketing Manager for Saputo, an international cheese company.

When I had my first son nearly 15 years ago, I decided to stop working outside the home and pursue some of my entrepreneurial interests. I had always been a strong standardized test taker, so I answered an ad on Craigslist to train with a small, local company to become an ACT tutor. After teaching group classes at a local high school for a season, I began to receive requests to tutor local students individually. I quickly discovered that I preferred this type of teaching, as I could customize my lesson plans to meet the needs and pacing of each unique student.

At the same time, I realized that many students needed help determining what to write for their college essays, understanding how to best market themselves, and crafting introspective, revealing stories that would resonate most strongly with colleges. I had served as a full-time member of the Northwestern Kellogg Admissions Committee during my two years as a student there and reviewed hundreds of applications. as a result of this experience, I became very well informed about the qualities colleges are seeking in top candidates and highly skilled in advising students on how to craft excellent essays and develop solid applications. I combined my writing abilities with my insider perspective on the admissions process to begin assisting students with the entire college application process, from preparing for the ACT/SAT to writing effective college admissions essays.

I went on to have three more boys, so over the past 15 years, I have experienced the joys and challenges of parenting four boys. I continued to work with students on a referral basis as a sole proprietor for over a decade, when I finally decided that as my boys were growing older and getting involved in school, I had the capacity to establish a full-time business. Thus, in early 2016, I incorporated Laura George Consulting to offer comprehensive tutoring and college essay and application services to a greater number of students in the Northern and Northwestern Chicago suburbs. My business has grown exponentially over the past year and a half, and it has been extremely gratifying to expand my ability to work with area students and empower them to achieve acceptance to their ideal colleges.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting a business is never uneventful. I have enjoyed connecting with so many great students in the area, and as many of them began to recommend me to other families, I faced the fortunate challenge of attempting to scale my business and establish adequate infrastructure to keep pace with the demand for services. This process was often fitful in the beginning, but I soon decided to hire a business consultant to help me institute more streamlined scheduling, billing, and communication practices so that I could maintain the high level of service I have always committed to providing my students and their families. I also hired a second tutor who served as a high school math tutor in two area high schools for 20 years. She now complements my tutoring services by working with all of my students on ACT/SAT math, while I provide tutoring in all other test subjects. This has allowed me to increase my capacity to assist more students.

Laura George Consulting – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I specialize in the entire college application process. I help students identify colleges that interest them, refine and solidify their target college lists, and complete their applications. Specifically, I help them brainstorm topics, edit, and strengthen their college application essays and personal statements, answer questions about filling out various application platforms, and provide interview prep for students who will be engaging in alumni interviews as part of the application process. I also provide ACT and SAT tutoring for high school students in the Northern and NW Chicago suburbs.

The process of applying to schools can be overwhelming and stressful. For 10+ years, I operated my business as Get It Write Consulting, and I have particularly enjoyed getting to know students so that I can help them tap into their unique, authentic voices when writing college application essays and provide customized ACT tutoring that empowers each child to achieve his or her full potential.

I am passionate about getting to know students and learning about their interests and achievements so that I can help them dig deep and produce the most effective college application essays. I find that students will open up to me even when they are reluctant to do so with their parents. As a parent of four myself, I am intimately familiar with this phenomenon!

Within the college application consulting process, I advise on topic selection then edit and strengthen the student’s essay drafts. I also tutor high school students in ACT and SAT test prep. I am an experienced writer with professional training, and I have a background in copywriting, PR, marketing, and advertising. As a member of the Kellogg Admissions Committee at Northwestern, I read and evaluated hundreds of applications and discussed them with the admissions officers at the school. I am, therefore, very well informed about what qualities schools are seeking in top candidates and highly skilled in advising clients on how to craft excellent essays and put together solid applications.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Chicago and its suburbs are excellent locations to start a business. People in the Chicago area are warm and genuine, and I have found that small business owners are extremely willing to share their wisdom and advice with fellow entrepreneurs. Families are also very supportive of their children, and these qualities have made conducting business in the Chicago area a gratifying and fulfilling experience.
