Meet Katie O’Connor of Shine: A Light on Fertility in Bucktown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie O’Connor.

Katie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Shine was born from my personal experience with infertility. I went through IVF to have my daughter back in 2o11. Shine started as a support community and has grown to be an organization that provides free support and mentorship, educational seminars and advocates for a proactive approach to fertility and women’s health.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I started out as simply a meet-up group. To grow, I knew I needed to be an official non profit! We got our 501c3 status back in June of 2014. There has definitely been a learning curve but growth cannot happen without setbacks! I am truly excited about 2018 and Shine… we have an amazing board of women who are passionate about Shine and dedicated to help us be the best we can be!

Please tell us about Shine: A Light on Fertility.
Shine is a non profit dedicated to women’s health, especially fertility health. We strive to take the silence out of the discussion around fertility health and fertility support. As an organization we have 3 core programs:

1) our mentorship program – Fertility Friends
2) our support meet ups – Shine Together
3) our community advocacy events – Shine Through

I’m proud of the grass roots community we’ve built. We’ve taken the time to grow slowly and stay true to our roots. Our Shine Through event, Shine Bright, is an event I am most proud of, this year we are celebrating it’s fourth year. The event brings together leaders in the women’s health profession, for a night to celebrate, learn and have an honest conversation about fertility and women’s health.

We are the only fertility based organization that focuses on advocacy, education AND support.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
