Meet Kate Kimmerle of Miss Spa in Northbrook

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kate Kimmerle.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Kate. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
While I was traveling around the world developing beauty products for retailers, I started noticing skin care trends. In Asia, Africa and South America, women have been using the same beauty ingredients and skin care routines for centuries. Seeing these traditions, I wanted to bring those highly-effective global ingredients to the U.S., and I wanted to do it at an affordable price for consumers. I wanted to make that wealth of knowledge accessible to every woman. Around this same time, I noticed the sheet mask trend in Asia. At this time, sheet masks weren’t even a thing yet in the U.S.! We were the first to bring sheet masks to the U.S., and we haven’t stopped innovating since!

My goal was, and continues to be, to combine ingredients from around the world with ancient beauty knowledge to create groundbreaking skin care formulas. From the beginning, quality has been a top priority at Miss Spa. I wanted to make high-quality, highly-effective products, but I needed them to be accessible to everyday women. Since I had a background in product development and sourcing, I knew how to marry the right formulas, delivery systems, packaging and merchandising to make great products. I then had to get the right people in place to make it happen!

I was really fortunate to have a background in product development in order to get Miss Spa up and running. Our team of experts in Asia, Europe and the U.S. helped figure out what the brand would look like. Our fantastic creative team helped make that vision into a concrete reality and together, we have all built this incredible brand.

It really is a dream come true to see Miss Spa products on the shelves of major retailers like Target and Ulta around the nation. But what’s really important to me is that through that amazing platform, we get to respond to the consumers’ needs. I was having a conversation with a woman about hyperpigmentation and adult acne, and it was that conversation that really spurred us to find solutions for those skin issues and incorporate that into what you see on store shelves. This brand is about taking care of our customers and meeting their skin care needs! We have so much innovation going on and with my background in retail, we’ve been able to do great things for the skin care industry.

Women love to talk to other women about their skin care concerns. We did so much research! We listened to the needs of our retailers and buyers, even friends and family, to figure out what concerns women have. That changes depending on age, ethnicity and even where they live. We rolled that all together to figure out what would be the best solutions.

For instance, cleansing is a big concern for a lot of women. There are so many questions that go into finding solutions! What level of cleansing does she need? What method is best? What skin type does she have? After asking these questions, we used ingredients like charcoal and tea tree to create different solutions so each woman could figure out what is best for her. With all of this in mind, we also wanted to keep skin care simple. We’re giving women amazing results at home in a short period of time. Most of our masks deliver results in 20 minutes or less. Not everyone has the time or the money to go to a spa and get a facial. It’s my goal to deliver those same results at home quickly and for an affordable price!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
We’re fortunate because we work with the gold standard in skin care suppliers around the globe, but things always come up! It wouldn’t be any fun without a few struggles! Whether it’s the supply chain or manufacturing, there are challenges with any business. The important thing is that we’ve learned a lot along the way. For example, for our Bee Venom Plumping Sheet Mask, I wanted the mask to be made of silk. But our manufacturers didn’t tell us that the silk came with a two-sided netting. We found out that people were using the net side which defeated the whole purpose of having a silk mask! We’ve had to deal with international ports being shut down or logistical issues that are completely out of our control. Anyone who starts a business or runs a company will tell you things will come up, you just have to learn from everything along the way. A sense of humor helps too!

Miss Spa – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Since an early age, people would ask me for makeup and beauty tips. I loved being that go-to girl! Now, I have built a company that’s a beauty resource for so many women and girls. That is what Miss Spa all about. Every woman knows what her skin problems are. She just doesn’t know what her skin needs to solve them. That’s where Miss Spa comes in!

There is so much confusion in the beauty industry. That’s why so many women have bathroom drawers filled with products that don’t work! Many brands list ingredients but don’t actually say what they do. Our packages clearly say what the product is and how it’s going to help your skin.

What really sets us apart is that we provide affordable, accessible skin care solutions for every skin care concern. And if there is something we missed, let us know! I’m proud of how innovative our team is. We are constantly scouring the globe for a new skin care secret just waiting to be discovered. Our team gathers ingredients from around the world and pairs them with science to deliver real results for real women. This is a brand for all women! No matter her age, skin type or concern, she will find something that is made just for her.

People are taking notice of all of this! It’s so amazing to see the distribution that we’ve achieved. We are in major drugstores as well as beauty retailers. They have given us this incredible platform to do what we love. It’s so exciting!

Even when friends or family discover a new Miss Spa product on a store shelf, that’s exciting! They’ll tell me how they can’t wait to try it out, and we are always so excited to hear their feedback. They know how particular I am and how focused I am to make quality products that deliver noticeable results, having that immediate feedback is so important.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Seeing Miss Spa on the shelves of every major retailer is an incredible success! Our mission is to make our products affordable and accessible and by having so many retailers believe in our products, we’re doing just that! A busy mom doesn’t have time to go to the mall or a specialty store; she can pick up Miss Spa masks while she’s on her weekly grocery run. Self-care is so important, but finding the time for it in our busy lives isn’t easy. By making these products available in so many places, we’re making it that much easier for women to take care of themselves. Being able to see the results and the reactions of our customers is something that I love so much! That is success for me!

Pricing:

  • Miss Spa is about making skin care accessible to all women. For that reason, most of our masks are just $3 or $4. Our masks are made with the highest-quality serums. If they were marketed differently, they would cost well over $100, but we have focused instead on building a beauty company for every woman.
