Meet Justin Meyers of Modern Muscle in Oswego

Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Meyers.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I had always been fascinated with high performance cars. In fact, my love for cars is truly what led me into becoming a mechanical engineer. I was always interested in engines and felt that my dream job would be developing engines for an auto manufacturer. I graduated college with my BSME degree and found that if I wanted to live in Illinois, working for an automotive company was quite unlikely. I then entered the workforce in the petro/chem industry designing oil refinery units. During that time, I satisfied my curiosity of engines and performance by taking on the hobby of building and racing my own car. I did that for many years, learned the ins and outs of what it takes by just learning on my own. I was then approached in 2007 by an old college friend that was interested in starting a performance shop and he knew that I was in to the hobby. We reignited our friendship by dreaming about starting a shop. Well, that dream turned into reality for me in late 2007 when we founded the company. What started as a small shop grew like wildfire and before I knew it I was giving up a very successful engineering career to chase a childhood dream. Here we are today, one of the most prominent performance shops in the area 10 years later.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The timing of the founding of this company coincided with the collapse of the economy and the start of the great recession. We didn’t know at the time how deep the financial crisis was going to be but here we are in early 2008 selling something that no one needs.

My business is completely dependent on a hobby that is supported by nothing but a large amount of disposable income. At a time where everyone in the country was tightening their belts we started this. Fortunately, the work that we produced spoke for itself. We quickly found our audience and demographic. Even during these tough times, we experienced rapid growth. We always figured if we could survive what happened in 2008, we could survive anything, and that’s exactly what we did. It certainly wasn’t easy, it was definitely painful but we’ve evolved and grown throughout all of it.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Well, a lot of things. That’s probably what most entrepreneurs would tell you, but there are lessons to be learned in business that can only be learned by doing it. I don’t think that I could have actually done anything differently. I think my path was such that made me learn what I needed to from making mistakes. Those mistakes have made myself and my company stronger, so I don’t regret them. I have always followed a strict moral and ethical code no matter what. I think if you lack that to begin with, you will struggle and fail.
