Meet Jovan Landry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jovan Landry.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Sure. My name is Jovan Landry. I was born in San Jose, California, and raised in Chicago and in the suburbs of Minnesota. I come from a small family of my mother, sister and two nephews. I am a graduate of Columbia College Chicago, and I currently am a part time artist.

Please tell us about your art.
My art is interdisciplinary. Although I love having my hand in all creative fields, I hone it down into film, photography and hip-hop music. Being a creative is my way of expression first and foremost. It has allowed me to find ways to be vulnerable and honest with myself. It also allows me to be a little more outgoing than normal. I also love to making art I want to inspire someone to make a positive change within themselves. I want people to see me and my work as impactful. When people think of Jovan Landry I want them to think of me as a strong, renaissance woman.

What do you think about conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
I feel that artists have lots of resources to put out their content however, that means way more people (the good, the bad and the ugly) are being creatives and content makers and that can oversaturate the market. Everyone is not mean to be creatives, but there is room at table. Chicago in particular can support one another for sure. It seems like we truly don’t support unless that person is popular, or if they relocate to another city. We need to support and share another’s work while they are still up and coming. We also need to give folks who are getting their foot through the door outlets to share their work as well.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I have several performances around the city every month. My next show is Saturday, July 14 at 9PM at Bourbon on Division. I also have a website: where folks can see my film, photography and music work.
