Meet John Ham and Ho Chung of Primus Home Care in Mount Prospect

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Ham and Ho Chung.

Before the start of Primus Home Care, John and Ho have been longtime friends, both of whom were looking to change career fields. John did not want his family business to be his life-time career, and Ho who was a recent law school graduate did not want to pursue a career in the legal field. While two friends were having a passionate conversation about being an entrepreneur, they agreed that health care for seniors was the most promising field to venture on. From there, they started to narrow down their options to a specific health care business that non-medical personnel are allowed to engage in.

After several months of preparations, they started a medical home care agency. However, after a couple of years, government regulations on medical home care agencies in Illinois and Florida became unreasonably strict, and many existing agencies were closing down. They needed a break-thru. That is when they decided to entirely convert their agency from medical home care to “non-medical” home care that offered less margin but had larger market. Today, they believe the said bold decision was the best business decision they have ever made.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
As mentioned, changes in government regulation, after a couple years of operations, was a serious threat to Primus Home Care. More specifically, medical home care agencies in Illinois and Florida were singled out and imposed greater scrutiny due to over saturation of agencies in the said states. These changes unexpectedly increased overhead expenses and make it difficult to accept new clients. For a new agency like Primus Home Care, this change was much greater burden compared to other existing agencies. After due assessment of situation, John and Ho made a decision to entirely convert the medical home care agency to “non-medical” home care that offered less margin but had many other benefits such as larger market share, length of services needed by clients, etc.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Primus Home Care story. Tell us more about the business.
Primus Home Care offers non-medical home care services including companion services, personal care services, and light housekeeping services.

There are a number of things that set Primus apart from other agencies.

First of all, Primus is one of the rare home care agencies that specialize in Live-In home care. Live-in home care requires special set of skills and qualities by caregivers. All caregivers in Primus Home Care are trained to perform live-in duties and are prepared to carry out such duties without further training as clients’ needs arises.

Second, unlike giant franchisers and their franchisees, our caregivers and staff understand importance of people. Management team’s first and last goal is to ensure all our caregivers are satisfied with their career because caregivers are the only ones who can ensure clients’ comfort and safety as well as privacy.

Third, caregivers in Primus Home Care undergo exceptionally rigorous screening process and training. Primus started as a medical home care agency, and Primus’ screening and training process did not change even after the conversion to non-medical home care services. Naturally, our process is much more rigorous compared to other agencies.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
The biggest luck that Primus had was choosing each other as business partner. John and Ho have entirely different traits and complement each other. Different phase of business operations required different traits, and shift of burdens between two partners never created any conflicts. They appreciate each other for their qualities, and this plays an important role in maintaining well-being of Primus Home Care.

After trying 2 other agencies I stumbled upon Primus for my mom and so glad I did! John and Ho will treat your parent like their own and find the best caregiver possible that fits your parent’s or spouse’s needs. I am not getting paid for this comment but want to thank Primus for an outstanding job for the past 2 years taking care of my mom!
