Today we’d like to introduce you to Jill Monterotti.
Jill, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
After moving from Chicago to New York and struggling with health issues brought on by stress, I realized I needed to start making more time for self-care. Something that I always had gone back to during stressful times was yoga, so when things got to the point where I knew I needed to make a change, I found a studio to go to, stopped making the excuse that I didn’t have time and went to class. To no surprise, I left that class feeling the best I had felt in months. I kept going back and felt drawn to the community that this studio had created. I began to make connections, new friends, and slowly started to feel like I was gaining control of my body and mind again. When the studio announced they were offering a teacher training, something in me just clicked and I knew I had to go for it. I told myself I was doing it to dive deeper into my own practice and that I had no intention of teaching, but after the first day of training I was telling a different story; I was hooked. New York was always a temporary hub for me because of work, so when it came time to think about moving back to Chicago, I was starting to consider my options. I had been blogging about yoga and plant based eating while I was in New York and was starting to gain a bit of a following. I wanted to continue to share my love of yoga, mindful living, and plant based lifestyle with people on a larger scale, so I started laying the ground work for Mirepoix Mercantile + Wellness Studio.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Securing a commercial lease and waiting for build out construction and permit approvals to be finalized were definitely big struggles for me. They were the biggest struggles because they were the things I didn’t have any control over. I was ready to open in January, but because the studio is in a new construction building, I had to jump through a lot more hoops than if I had just gone into an already built out space and set up shop immediately. In the end, those bumps in the road were worth it because I was able to choose every single fixture, light switch, and tile and build the space exactly as I imagined it.
Mirepoix Mercantile + Wellness Studio – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
A mirepoix is a French cooking term for the combination of celery, carrots, and onion that is used as the base for soups and stews. These three simple ingredients are the foundation of bold, delicious meals, and the dish doesn’t reach its full potential without all three being present. After living in New York, I realized that our bodies like balance. They don’t like excess amount of alcohol, constant intense cardio workouts, too much sugar, or skincare and home good products that are loaded with toxins. Mirepoix Mercantile + Wellness Studio is a place where you can curate your own wellness balance. We offer mindful vinyasa and power vinyasa classes, meditation, kombucha on tap, and wellness products from hand soap to adaptogenic herbs to all-purpose cleaner. Our version of a mirepoix at the studio is: move, nourish, meditate. We are always striving to educate students on how best to achieve their own version of that balance. For students who are looking to dive deeper into these practices we now offer private and group health coaching as well.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My proudest moments are when we get positive feedback from students. Whether they walk in and notice that it smells fresh from our organic essential oils, or they are thanking the teacher after class, it’s the little comments that make me the proudest. I am so detail oriented, that when those little things are having a positive effect on students, it really validates all the small details we focus on at the studio to ensure their experience leaves them feeling their best.
