Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Martinez.
Jessica, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
As a child, I always obsessed with playing stylist. With a younger sister at home, she was forced to be my “client.” I’d spend hours playing with her hair and would secretly take my mom’s styling products and tools. As I aged, I began to do my own hair I would curl it and do simple up-dos. Years passed and I began a business internship. At this company, I met a graduate from Paul Mitchell through a mutual friend in which one of our conversations, I had mentioned to her about my passion of wanting to do hair but with a daughter to support, I had to have a stable job so I had to continue working there. One day, this friend, mentioned about the programs with Paul Mitchell, I decided to go and inquire; that same day, I signed up. After graduating from Paul Mitchell, I began to look for stylist jobs and I had no luck. I was referred to the owner of Dreams Hair Salon (now Reve Esthetics), and that’s where my career began. Manuela was the owner and I am beyond grateful for what she taught me and for the opportunity she gave me to work with her. I started as an assistant and then moved up to having my own chair. She then retired and her daughter Daisy took ownership. Daisy was always keeping us up-to-date with the newest of products, techniques and new skills. I worked closely with Daisy for five years; thankful for what she taught me and giving me the opportunity to grow professionally. Due to some personal issues, I had to take time off my career this occurs in early 2016.
In 2017, a co-worker who worked at Dreams Hair Salon had reached out to me, his name is Anjel Ortega from Glam Hair Co. He reached out to ask if I was planning to come back to my career. He stated that he was moving back to California and he had a lot of inquiries from Brides and other parties here in Chicago. He suggested that I should agree to give out my information to these inquiries. After thinking about it, I realized that I had to say yes to him. A part of me was missing, that was my passion. I agree to take these inquiries, I started by doing weekends and that progressed to doing trials during the week. He then offered me sessions to refresh my up-do skills. After a few lessons, he asked me to join him under Glam Hair Co, to work for big parties with him.
After a few months, I began to work in my own home providing clients with color, cuts and blow dries.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I can’t say that it has been a smooth road. In February of 2016, I had to put my career on hold. That year my oldest child, Ariel, my daughter was diagnosed with Leukemia for a second time. July of 2016, I found out I was pregnant. Dealing with cancer and pregnancy, really broke me even though many people would be overly excited with the joy of a new child, though I felt broken. I was filled with mixed emotions and I also had to put my career on hold to attend to my families needs.
Please tell us about Hairby_Jezz.
After Anjel reaching out to me and taking the inquiries he had here in Chicago, I felt that was a turning point in my life. I began to advertise myself again on social media, Facebook and Instagram. In which many of my old clients reached out and began to schedule appoints, slowly it progressed to where I was having big bridal parties that I had to work by myself.
I am a full-service hairdresser. I specialized in all types of up-dos. My clients are either brides or quinceaneras and the people with those parties. My clientele is either getting up-dos, trials, hair color, cuts, and blow-dries.
There is a saying in Spanish, ” Despues de la tormenta, llega la calma” meaning after the storm, the calm arrives. This is what makes me proud. Because, after everything I went to I am very proud of where I am, the business I have and my clientele.
What sets me apart from the rest is that even though there is a lot of competition, when I do my work I have my personal touch. I believe that the connection I make with my clients is excellent in which gives them the confidence that they are in good hands.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Goes as far back as me doing hair on my barbies and growing up and doing my sisters hair. Playing a stylist with my sister was my realization point, that this was my passion.
