Meet Jay Larkin of WhirlWin Martial Arts in Northlake

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay Larkin.

Jay, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I enjoyed martial arts movies–however, when some high school students threatened to put out a cigarette on my face if I didn’t get off my bike, my mom was ok with me joining a school. I was in 8th grade at the time.

I didn’t want others to feel as insecure and as powerless as I did. Martial arts helped me get thru high school. I went to college so I could get the skills to open my own school.

This is a great profession to make a real difference in people’s lives. 26 years later, still here. 🙂

Has it been a smooth road?
Overall, a smooth road. Last year though the landlord was foreclosed on, and our status was unclear for months. I spent a lot of time looking at other places and was sad to have to possibly move. But the new owner was reasonable, helpful even, and we’re still going strong.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with WhirlWin Martial Arts – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We’re a 5 star rated karate school that strengthens Confidence and teaches life-skills thru self-defense and fitness training in a disciplined, yet friendly environment.

I’m proud of our name and what it stands for: it’s not Whirl ‘lose’, it’s Whirl ‘Win!’. We use the martial arts to strengthen the student mentally, physically, emotionally, and socially. Enjoy more ‘wins’ in daily life. Our use of ‘triangulation’ for leadership training and the results it produces has helped us earn 100 five star reviews on google! (One of only a few schools in Illinois)
