Today we’d like to introduce you to James Wellman.
Thanks for sharing your story with us James. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I realized that I wanted to be a psychologist from the first class, Psychology 101, where I seemed to have an understanding of the concepts without having the language to label. Although I did not realize that I wanted to be a psychologist until college, my passion for fairness, equality and justice started at a much earlier age. Growing up as a coal-miner’s son in an impoverished small town in Eastern Kentucky provided an opportunity for me experience the immense amount of unmet needs, as well as the challenges or the consequences for individuals that have less. I suppose, without knowing so, I have always been a developing psychologist in the making. Thankfully, I found the best personal, academic, and professional fit for me.
Has it been a smooth road?
The path to becoming a psychologist was not smooth with many challenges along the way. The most significant challenge was facing many fears along the way and taking significant risks no matter my level of discomfort. My family, my college peers, and even some colleagues have levels of fear that I think have prevented them from actualizing their dreams. Another challenge was managing to continue progressing and push myself academically while struggling from a lack of financial support for what seemed to be many, many years. So with acclimating to financial stress throughout many different phases of life, I thought why not just eat Ramen noodles for one more year and start my own group practice. Wellman Psychology & Associates started 2 years after I completed my post-doctoral internship in 2012. I began the practice as the only practicing psychotherapist having just 3 clients. With increasing demand, the need became apparent to hire on more clinicians. Wellman Psychology & Associates now has 8 clinicians on staff with more growth in the future.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Wellman Psychology & Associates story. Tell us more about the business.
Wellman Psychology & Associates uses an integrative approach, employing cognitive behavioral, psychodynamic, and interpersonal therapies to help children, adolescents, and adults gain insight and work through varied life concerns, and to help children and families work through their challenges. Our therapists pride themselves on being able to serve a diverse group of people. We have extensive knowledge in various areas including Anxiety, Depression, PTSD, ADHD, LGBTQ specific issues, Parenting, Relationships issues, Testing — Evaluation, Self-esteem and Autism. As a group practice, we are most proud of the ongoing efficacy of our diverse range of treatment styles and modalities.
We have continued to grow and see no end to our potential to meet the growing mental health needs of many different communities.
Along with life experience, resulting wisdom and professional expertise, my personal therapy style is delivered in a different manner for each client. I think that effective therapeutic intervention requires cognitive flexibility, building on the way the client sees their own self, family, and culture, instead of imposing your own thoughts and ideas.
