Today we’d like to introduce you to Hallie Belt.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story?
Equipped with an M.A. and a B.A. in English literature, I taught English Composition at Columbia College and English as a Foreign Language at Roosevelt University, The American School in Switzerland, Yokohama Hayato School in Japan, and Benito Perez Galdos bilingual elementary school in Spain.
For 17 years, I have also been an in-demand Chicago ad agency editor/proofreader, but in 2008, an ad agency laid me off (I had been promoted a couple of months earlier) and paid for me to attend an outplacement agency, where I became better skilled at writing resumes. Wanting to do something different, I also took a few courses at the Instituto Cervantes to improve my Spanish language skills and then spent 2009-2010 teaching in Madrid, Spain.
When I returned to the U.S., I decided to start my own business so that I could better control my employment situation, i.e., not allow someone else to determine my professional fate. I knew I could use my academic and professional background to help others clearly articulate their message, so I built my own website, got business cards, advertised myself on various social media, got involved in a few networking groups, wrote a couple of blogs and a book (now on Amazon), and worked extremely hard.
Since that time, I have collaborated with hundreds of clients on their resume, LinkedIn page, cover letter, website, or any other document. I feel very satisfied knowing that through my writing, editing, proofreading, and teaching skills, I have helped my clients find a job, write a well-organized paper, advertise their business, assure the quality of their website, and much more. I can work (edit, proofread, write, and even do voice-over) anywhere in the world: All I need is my laptop!
Has it been a smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth road because I had to discover what does and doesn’t work as it relates to my business. While I have a 5-star rating on Yelp and a steady stream of clients, I have to balance all of the editing, writing, and proofreading work with teaching English Composition and being a music student at Harold Washington College. This past semester, I took a business course that has helped me with my own business, and I will graduate with a music certificate next semester. Basically, I am very good at managing my time, but I have to say that some days are more challenging than others.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the BeltStyles story. Tell us more about the business.
I, Hallie Belt of BeltStyles, specialize in writing, editing, and proofreading content for resumes, cover letters, LinkedIn profiles, websites, ads, blogs, brochures, pitches, presentations, scripts, sketches, and more.
I think what sets me apart is that I have an M.A. and a B.A. in English, taught English Composition and grammar for several years, edited/proofed nine books and wrote my own book (“The Search for Order: T.S. Eliot’s Use of Music and Musical Form” — available on Amazon), have a 5-star rating on Yelp, taught abroad (Japan, Spain, and Switzerland) for 4 1/2 years, speak another language, collaborate well with all kinds of people, completed the sketch comedy writing program at Chicago’s Second City, and have an extremely good sense of humor.
I am proudest of the fact that I help others articulate their message so that they can achieve their academic and/or professional goals.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
In addition to helping others with their resumes, cover letters, and LinkedIn profiles, I see myself and BeltStyles reaching a global audience through my upcoming books and related speeches, helping celebrities write their books, and writing and doing voice-over for television and film.
