Meet Macaire Douglas of Half Pint Shop in Lakeview

Today we’d like to introduce you to Macaire Douglas.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I opened Half Pint Shop in the winter of 2014 as an online children’s store. Before the birth of my first son in 2011 I worked in retail, marketing and social media and took a break to be a stay-at-home mom. I really missed having a creative outlet and always wanted to own my own business. I loved dressing my son and found a lack of stores that carried my favorite parent-owned brands. I love to support small business and knew that was where my focus should be. My first order for the shop was with a mom and husband team that screen printed their own designs. This has always been the core of Half Pint Shop and over the last three and a half years we’ve stayed true. We’ve grown in the brands and types of goods we stock – expanding to furniture when we opened our brick & mortar here in Chicago in 2016.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Growth is hard and change is scary, but I’ve tried to always stay true to the values I opened the shop with. There were definitely some learning curves – oh how I wish we knew what we know now regarding SEO! I’m also lucky to have found mutual support among other like-minded shop owners, something I find so refreshing.

When I started the online store in 2014 I was pregnant with my second son. So having a growing family as I was growing my business was definitely a challenge. I often remind myself that family comes first – I started the business online because I still wanted to be home with my sons. After doing pop-up events around the city we moved into our brick & mortar over a year ago and it has helped our business grow so much. We have “studio” hours – meaning they are not set hours but we’re in almost every day and often customers make appointments. I’m still able to be there for my kids too, and the shop is a five minute walk from home and on the way to the kids’ school. I feel really lucky!

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Half Pint Shop – what should we know?
Half Pint Shop stocks modern and eco-friendly nursery furniture, baby gear and quality children’s clothing, both online and in our store. We support small business designers – I know the story behind every brand we carry and they’re almost all parent-owned. I find some of the best designs for children come from parents themselves. Most of the brands I stock started because they found something lacking in the market – whether it was modern and sustainable furniture, a pacifier that doesn’t get dirty when falling to the ground or trendy, well-made clothing. This is what I’m most proud of – we’re parents supporting other parents, all trying to make the best lives for our families.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My husband is a huge part of my business. I couldn’t do it without him and I really love that we get to work together. My mother also helps with our website and she even creates some items for the shop. Friends and other family members are always there to lend a hand with events and help with our kids too.
