Today we’d like to introduce you to Georgia Jones.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’m one of those lucky people who kind of always knew what I wanted to do. I started out doing social work very early, and still love it!
I was also “lucky” to have had anxiety as a child. After determining that nothing was physically wrong, a kind doctor suggested I use some meditation techniques to promote relaxation in my body. I’ve been using those ever since and felt great relief. Over the years, I’ve become more and more interested in how meditation changes the way we relate to emotions, pain and suffering. I started using mindfulness meditation with clients many years ago, and decided that would be my focus when I began Chicago Mindful Psychotherapy. Now I love going to work every day, surrounded by other talented therapists who challenge me and keep me accountable to my own values of living mindfully and vibrantly.
Has it been a smooth road?
I was a supervisor and administrator at a large community mental health center for almost 10 years, and I learned so, so much during that time. Everyone there was committed to their work, and it felt like family – to both the staff and the clients! I learned about the importance of balancing competing goals, protecting staff from administrative frustrations, and how to handle true mental health crises. I gained confidence and practice at building a team and making sure every aspect of the process is mission-driven. Establishing CMP went much more smoothly because of those years of practice beforehand.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
CMP exists to help people live with more ease. Whether it’s stress, anxiety, depression, relationship conflict – we want our clients to thrive and feel empowered, resilient and engaged. We believe (through personal experience and years of practice) that mindfulness really helps with this. And what truly sets us apart is that we practice what we preach! Each of the therapists here has their own personal meditation practice and we support and hold each other accountable. We are constantly learning from each other and our clients. We also love to be involved in the community and offer free meditation groups, art openings and open houses. We want mindfulness to become a way of life, and so we work hard to make it accessible and easily integrated into modern, busy lives. Including our own!
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Chicago is fabulous place! Full of energy, life and culture. Sometimes all the stimulation can be stressful or overwhelming too, so learning how to calmly embrace each moment, one at a time, might be harder to do for some folks. That’s why it’s so important that a business like ours – that offers the guidance and support to do that – is so important.
We’re also a haven from the pressures and irritations that can sometimes come along with navigating a huge amount of people in a dense space, like Chicago. Of course, I’m biased, but I feel like Chicago, (and everywhere!), can use as much compassion and mindfulness as we can get!
