Meet Geneva Boyett

Today we’d like to introduce you to Geneva Boyett,

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
My intrigue with photography began as a 20-year-old at university. I was taking several art classes at the time and grew to love how components of fine art could be brought into photographs. I loved the fact that you could look at a picture and immediately feel nostalgia as it took you back to that specific moment in time. I wanted my work to do that for people, to tell a story and help you remember what that moment felt like.

My first wedding was a friend of mine who was getting married while still in school. They didn’t have much of a budget but saw something in my work that spoke to them and trusted me with their day. Since then I’ve been shooting primarily wedding work with a recent interest in brands and editorials. Every day looks different for me and I love that about my job.

I go from editing at my desk with a fresh cup of coffee to shooting in some beautiful location to meeting with couples to styling a set for a shoot. A lot has changed since photography first entered my life. The infatuation with its ability to relive moments, however, continues to be at the heart of my candid, cinematic feel.

Please tell us about your art.
I would describe my style as film-inspired, fine art photography. I love the timeless, nostalgic feel of old film photographs and try to embody that same feeling in my images. Photography has also always been an art-form for me. I hope that people can look at my work and it would evoke an emotional response in whatever story it’s telling, just as a painting or a more traditional piece of art would.

As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
I think that if your work as an artist can evoke empathy in people, to grow the ability for people to understand what another person is feeling, that to me is paramount to art.
