Today we’d like to introduce you to Freddie OldSoul. She and her team share her story with us below.
Please kick things off for us with some background on the story.
A Chicago native hip hop artist, Freddie Old Soul was influenced to make music through her love for poetry. Even as a kid, she was a heavy reader, and writer. She participated in Louder than a bomb in high school after just getting the feeling that she should walk into an audition. Her life changed after walking through that door because poetry showed her a strength she thought she never possessed. People wanted to be popular in high school and all she wanted to do was rap. From beating on lunch tables, and coming up with rhymes in music class she was convinced that this was her life. Brother Mike, the former mentor, and creator of You media also inspired Freddie. She would go to Lyricist loft at the Harold Washington library every Wednesday and rap with some of the biggest people in the industry now. She vividly remembers rainy days on the corner freestyling with Chance The Rapper, Joey Purp, Talent, and DJ such and such, she had to rap after that. She became one of the most lyrical talents to come to that place.
After forming a group with two high school friends called “Coolie Chi” she was making her first appearances on stage and in real studios. She uses to yell on the mic. She could never understand how to get her voice to sound cool. She so used to poetry and screaming. It just didn’t work. Another reason it didn’t work was that they had her rapping about sex and drugs. She was far from the Trina type. One day, they made a song about something real. She wrote a verse that spoke through her soul and told her truth. It was so good, that she decided to leave the group to continue on the path of talking about what was “real.” She eventually got better in the studio, no longer screaming on the mic, and found her sound. She now calls herself Freddie Old Soul because speaking the truth that comes from within is the root of her excellence.
Please tell us about your art.
I am a hip hop artist that creates music to elevate the souls of those who listen. I speak my truth, flaws, and deepest secrets in order to alleviate the pain in my own self. The message behind my music is discovering yourself. Discover who you really are in a world that tells you that you cannot be who you want to be. My music is here to help you question everything. I hope people will pick up a book after listening to me. Dive into the internet and find out the many levels of their soul. Look in the mirror and accept yourself. I hope people can heal through my music.
Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
If you gotta go to work, go to work. Don’t let anyone tell you not to go to work, but spend that money your working for on your music. Invest that money into your craft and come up with ways to make revenue from your music. It could be shirts or just anything that you are good at. Don’t worry about money, work with people that want to work with you regardless of money. Build a team and get the money together.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
