Meet Jennifer Knuth of FITT-RX in Elmhurst

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Knuth.

In 2012, Jen Knuth and Jill Giorno (two moms with a passion for fitness) decided to combine their existing personal and group fitness businesses into FITT-RX. They were able to leverage their relationships within the community of Elmhurst and focus on both group classes and personal training. The studio launched with only 5 fitness instructors/personal trainers and a handful of classes. Over the last 5 years, FITT-RX has gone through a series of transition, including Jen taking over as the sole owner.

More importantly, the studio has grown to have 16 trainers and offer 30+classes per week, personal and small group training, and fitness workshops for men, women, and children of all ages.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
FITT-RX was the first fitness studio to open in downtown Elmhurst, and the first few years of business were generally smooth due to the market demand for less large, traditional gym settings and more boutique fitness studios.

Within the last two years, roughly 10 fitness studios and an additional 2 large, traditional gyms have opened in town. As you can imagine, in a town of roughly 44,000 people, the market has become over-saturated with options. Unlike, FITT-RX, these businesses are franchised or backed by corporate funding, enabling them to acquire the latest technology, advertise with a greater reach, and respond more quickly to market demands. This has created challenges for FITT-RX to keep at the same pace with our competitors and attract new clientele while sticking to our mission and values.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about FITT-RX – what should we know?
We believe in stripping away the nonsense and, instead, catering to the fundamental fitness needs of our clients. Our goal is to tailor our workouts to help clients succeed and eliminate the distractions of the latest trends. This approach attracts people of all fitness levels who are searching for something they would not be able to find elsewhere in our market.

Our staff has over 85 years of combined fitness experience. A key thing that sets our trainers apart from any other fitness entity, is that all of them hold nationally recognized fitness credentials and invest in continuing education through conferences. Whereas, trainers at other studios or gyms only need to complete off-the-shelf training certifications and train with scripted workout plans.

Our knowledge, combined with our passion for health and fitness, allows us to offer top-notch personal training and group exercise classes. We are also able to work with men, women and children of all ages and fitness levels.

FITT-RX focuses on the people side of business which separates us from our competition. Instead of making decisions based on corporate protocol and clocking out at the end of the day, we are driven by building a sense of community and people gravitate towards our generosity. We host numerous charity events throughout the year, sponsor local fundraising events, and offer workshops and seminars that provide an education on all things related to health and fitness.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
When clients step foot in the door, they feel a sense of belonging and a part of a community where they will continuously feel supported to achieve their fitness goals.

Even when clients decide to try other studios, they oftentimes return and say FITT-RX feels like home. We maintain an environment where people can be a part of something bigger and their entire family can feel supported. We even sacrifice physical space to train so that we can offer “Katie Kare” to their kids.

One of the best pieces of advice Jen received when starting FITT-RX was, “don’t change who you are, get better at what you do, and think bigger.” FITT-RX is often referred to as the “Cheers of Elmhurst,” where everyone knows your name. Our mission and core values haven’t changed over the last 5 years even with a lot of competition knocking on our door and we take great pride in that.
